My 78 280Z exhibits some bucking but only below a half a tank of gas. I has been explained to me that the fuel pipe in the tank may have a hole in it and when the fuel gets low it starts sucking air & fuel. I fill the car up & it runs fine. The gas tank has been redone, fuel filter cleaned etc. The only way to fix is to pull the tube and basket by drilling another hole in the tank. The fuel tank seems to be a weak point on these cars especially when the car isn't driven much and allowed to sit. I have been told to keep the tank full when storing.

Are there no plastic Z fuel tank reproductions? I gotta believe they wouldn't be that costly to make and there is a market for one. I know I'd buy one. Hummmmmm?

Several people on the site have replaced their fuel tank (and spare tire mounting) with a fuel cell.

Other than that, I have not seen a solution offered.

That is a good deal with the core charge. Less than $50 on an exchange basis for a new tank. My biggest concern is if you read in their terms and conditions they are able to reject tanks and/or not give full exchange value if your tank is not "suitable" for repair. Since mine knowingly has a leak and patch, I am not sure if they would take it or not. I know there are much worse tanks out there, but I also would rather not spend $400+ on a tank if they do not accept mine.

I apologize for my ignoramous wishful thinking. I saw the price at $440 and a core charge of $395. I thought the charge was $440 and then you would get reimbursed $395 for the core tank. I apologize for my misunderstanding.

That's okay. If you had shopped with ZCarSource before, you'd know that $50 for a tank would be WAY below what they normally charge for parts.

I have not used them. I have simply used MSA and O'Reily Auto Parts so far for the few things I have needed. Since that is the price a new tank is going to be, I think I am going to attempt to fix mine and see what happens.

I need to drop my tank, clean it, and really good a good look (And take pics) to see what I am really dealing with. If it is just a 6x6 sheet metal patch and treat then that is probably my cheapest solution. Hopefully, I will be able to pull it this weekend.

Oddjob on HybridZ had a custom replacement made for about the same cost as a remanufactured tank from Zcarsource. It's worth a view...
