How to insure?

Anyone have any tips on how to insure mutiple Z car ownership?

I have a clean driving record and insure my 79 280zx for 9 month out of the year. I park it in the garage December through march and just leave the comprehensive on it. Im looking at buying a 71 z that is definitely restorable, mostly needs paint and a bit of body tweeking, like the rear bumper straightened. Looks like minimal rust around the rocker panels, but not bad.

I wondered about using this z only on weeknds while I saved up for a good paint job. i talked to a collector car insurance place who said they mostly insure cars that are "show quality" but would CONSIDER covering the 71.

They said they might cover it for a small amount like 3000 dollars with the plan that if i did future biody and paint work they could increase the coverage. The premium would only be 70 bucks a year, if i garage it and drive less than 2500 miles per year. That I can do, but again they said they'd consider it based on photos i send of the car, which is very original.

I asked about maybe setting up the ZX that way instead since it is in excellant condition, and they said maybe, again depending on how they read any photos i send.

My other option is to insure both cars with regular insurance and put them back in the garage earlier in the fall and pull em out later in the spring. OK what do all you folks with multiple cars do for insurance to try to save some money??

I'm in the same boat you are. 2 cars are insured all the time. But one car is only insured when I want it. Usually from April to October. I tried getting "collector insurance" from a comapny and they said my "daily driver" must be newer than the car I wanted to insure. Daily driver is a 72. Wanted to insure a 73. Also, the "collector insurance" limits you to a certain mileage you can drive per year. I think it was 2,000. If I just insure the 73 for seven months I save some money. I think I've heard the higher your deductible the lower your payment. Its up to you to work with your agent to get the best deal/best savings. Much luck.

I just go pl pd, a regular insurance company won't give you what it is really worth and I don't figure on wrecking it myself, I figure someone will be hitting me and their insurance company is the one I'll have to deal with.

If I go PL PD I'm looking at $200 a year, full coverage around $500, I've had the car over 20 years so I've got $6000 I've saved not paying somebody for something I didn't use, that will do a lot of fixing if I ever need to and I don't plan on it.

I run pl pd on all of my vehicals even my 99 Silverado, the savings add up quick and if you do have a dumba$$ attack then you pay to fix it and the insurance company is none the wiser.

Check with your regular insurance company, ask them about an agreed value policy on your car.

An agreed value policy is where you insure an item for AN amount and they asses the risk and determine how much to charge you. This is not as expensive as it sounds. Many times they'll just discount the extra car charge and give you the same coverage on ALL your vehicles.

If you are trying to insure a daily driver, get what you can afford, but don't go without it.

I dont have insurance. I drive very carefully! But then i'm not driving the z because its still being restored. Will get insurance when i do start driving it (i hope - I have a few blemishes on my driving record).

Hagerty is excellent insurance, but check the fine print. They require the car to be garaged in an attached garage and for there to be another vehicle other than the insured one which is the primary driver. Rental stalls aren't eligible nor are unattached garages, to the best of my knowledge.

I have 4 cars insured with the same company. Two have full coverage / $500 deductible; one has full use the other has secondary car use (I work from home.). The third and fourth are the Z and the Roadster. The Z has Pleasure Car use (i.e. only fairweather use) no limitation on mileage. The Roadster is under Storage (it's being restored.). Total is approx. $800, which boils down to $67 a month.

I tried to get hagerty and they were VERY strict on where you drove the car. basically, you have to be out for a Sunday drive OR going to a car show. I'm sure if you get in an accident doing ANYTHING else, they will not pay out on ANYTHING! my .02
