TomoHawk Posted March 25, 2004 Share #25 Posted March 25, 2004 The grinding was when using 14 inch rims. The calipers were a little too big.
frank13 Posted May 5, 2004 Share #26 Posted May 5, 2004 Hey ecp48 How does the set up work with the '81-'84 Rear Maxima brackets work out with the SX calipers. Need spacers or shims. There was some skuttlebuut about the 280ZX and the Sx calipers being the same. I tried to compare them to each other last time out but it was raing fairly hard and the casting numbers were not really visable throught the sheets of rain pouring off my face. The do seem very alike. and the arm/bracket for the parking brake cable is bolt on to both if I remeber right. Any more info for the Maxima brackets w/SX calipers? :devious:
ecp48 Posted May 5, 2004 Share #27 Posted May 5, 2004 Frank13I have not installed them yet. I purchased the 240SX calipers with the brackets. They definitely bolt on. I originally thought you used the 300ZX rear rotors, but have since found that to be untrue. The 300ZX rear rotor only works with the aftermarket brackets, not the maxima.I have lined up the caliper/bracket and maxima/280zx rotors and they appear to work. I will post it next week after installation. The difference between the 240SX and late 280ZX calipers appear to be a different angle for the bracket which mounts the emergency brake cable. I also believe there is a difference in the original brake hose (280ZX vs. 240SX).ecp48
frank13 Posted May 5, 2004 Share #28 Posted May 5, 2004 Hey ecp48, so what you are saying is the SX binders with 280ZX disc (which year please) will/should bolt right up? Yes I agree with you on the different angle of the Ebrake mount bracket. But as I stated earlier, I remember the brackets being bolt on affairs. So should be easy to swap brackets from one to the other. As for the brake hose the SX has a hollow banjo bolt setup. The ZX has the metric flare union. Dude I will be looking foward to what you are gonna post coming up on your conversion! And If you can or do get any further information about this variant conversion please let me know. I have half this stuff right now but if there is any alternative I would like to take that into account before commiting to one type of conversion. Thanx :devious:
ecp48 Posted May 5, 2004 Share #29 Posted May 5, 2004 Frank13,I probably wasn't clear. The brackets I am using are the 81-82 Maxima bolt on brackets. They originally came on the Maxima with a caliper which "looks" just like the 280ZX caliper. I bought the brackets with a set fo 240SX calipers attached (standard bolt on).As I said, the only external/visual difference that I noted was the brake line, for which I got the stainless steel conversion pieces from fonebooth.com and the emergency brake connection. I bought KVR pads from Ross Corrigan. The rotors I am using are from the Maxima, as I had them. I am told that any of the late 280ZX rotors, 81 to 83 will work. My original misconception was that the larger rotor from the 84-85 300ZX (4 lug) would work, but they are much to big and only work with the Ross Corrigan (Modern Motorsports) or fonebooth.com aftermarket (fabricated brackets), unfortunately.Hope this is clearer. I verified that the calipers were 240SX by matching the casting numbers!ecp48
LanceM Posted May 5, 2004 Share #30 Posted May 5, 2004 epc, Just want to clairify, rear calipers and rotors from an 81 will not work, 82-83 will. don't want anyone grabbing the wrong thing at the pick and pull
frank13 Posted May 5, 2004 Share #31 Posted May 5, 2004 OK guys lets try this another way. I've reread this thread and now I will list the parts, models, years. This is for the Maxima brackets w/Maxima or 280ZX Rotors. And 280ZX Calipers. I think it looks like we are still up in the air about the SX calipers untill ecp48 posts on his install very soon. But my intentions for this are to get all our collective information and hopefully set it in stone for what WILL AND WILL NOT work when using these bone yard parts. I hope you all can agree with this. So if I make a mistake or leave something out please let me know, remember I am doing this for all of use and with all of our information and experience. frank13 Posted May 6, 2004 Share #32 Posted May 6, 2004 So far from this post we have the following parts list:1) 1981-1984 Maxima {RWD} rear disc Caliper mounting brackets. Which appear to by very rare in bolt on form in the breaker yards. So new from the dealer is an option. At $50 + -. Nissan P/T 4415504S10 Adapter C (2 required).2) 1982-1983 Rotors from the Maxima or 280ZX. this needs better confirmation as to whether both the Maxima & 280ZX Rotors will bolt right up. Also The Years. Starting from 1981 or 1982 will be direct bolt on. Gentlemen , notice I said "Direct Bolt on" Please be forth coming if any grinding are other Fabrication is needed.3)1981-1983 280ZX Rear Calipers. Seems from the post that both ZXT and ZX Binders will do the Trick.4)1979-1981 280ZX 15/16's M/C.
frank13 Posted May 6, 2004 Share #33 Posted May 6, 2004 LanceM, ecp48, 240ZX, guys how does this look? Anything need to be added or changed from your guys experience? I find this set up much more intresting than buying one over the counter. All though that would be much cleaner. I have parts for the MML conversion. But this variant is just that much more different than the rest that have been done. Not real trick but very flexable if indeed the SX calipers can be use as well. Please add corrections as needed or any other options. Rember I am only trying to catalog this conversion. :devious:

From my searches in the junkyards, it would appear that the bolt on brackets were only on the 80 to sometime in early 81 RWD Maximas. I don't know what month the cut-off is but I have seen 81s with both types. But I did notice that any Maxima with a 79 or 80 build date early enough to be called an 80 has the bolt on brackets. They seemed to change somewhere between 9/80 and 11/80.
