My first Z

Hey hows it going. My names andy. Ive wanted a z car for years. Every morning on my bus ride to junior high i used to see a cherry 240 z parked along the curb on my bus route. The first time I seen it knew i wanted a 240Z. Well Its many years later and now I have finally gotten a z. Its a 240 z manufactured in 10/71. It is in great shape and has very little rust. It has dual su carbs and a later model fuel injection head. It runs, but from my past experience with dual carbs i can tell that the carbs need balancing. It chugs while revving in nuetral and spits out medium amounts of black smoke. This combined with horrible gas milage is telling me it is running way too rich. Im planning on buying an air/fuel ratio gauge and a carb sync tool. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks very much

Andy,

Welcome to the club. It's always a great feeling to finally get the car that you've dreamed of for so many years. Once you get yours sorted out you'll be amazed by how well the car's perfromance and handling match its looks!!

Sounds like you are familiar with getting your hands dirty. One of the great things about this club is the amount of information people posess regarding maintaining and repairing these cars, and how willing they are to share. So if you ever need any help, advise or commiseration, this is the place to come to.

Cheers,

Peter

Hey thanks for the welcome. ive been out tinkering under the hood of the z. I backed down the slow mixture screws and got it running real nice down low. So the idle adjustment is actually controlling the idle. Not the carb adjustment screws. I noticed right off the bat that i can tell really easily by sound when one carb is set higher. the higher set carb will make a sucking sound before the other one when you blip the throttle. Im already starting to get a feel for the carbs by how the car runs so im sure ill be able to keep her running alright till i pick up a unisync. I cant wait till i get her balanced and tuned right though. Get rid of that unbalanced sound and have that nice smooth sound my buddies z has. She ran good today but im still waiting to hear my six perfecly tuned and balanced, what a beutifull sound. Im new to tuning dual carbs, but at least my baby isnt rudely spitting out black smoke now. plus she idles rock solid. Ill let you guys know how things are coming and ill work on getting some pictures....

Hey Andy welcome to the club. Are you a rich man or a disillusioned poor person that looks at an entire floor board that's been rusted out and thinks "ya know that's not so bad"? Sort of like shallow Hal but with a car!

definetly the poor dilusional guy that looks at a rusted floor pan and says "well its not so bad". Its funny that you should say that cause ive actually done that with a vw van and a vw squareback. LOL. The z's not that bad, though, i hope............have to wait till i pull up the carpet.....................
