Is this person a member on this board? He's bought 3 "Nissan 2400 OHC" valve covers in the last few months off eBay two of which he's out bid me on. :( I'm just wondering how many cars he's working on and what they look like (not mad about being out bid, dissapointed but not mad...that's just the way eBay works).

I looked over the three auctions for these valve covers and he's a sniper! Comes in with less than 10seconds left in the auction and places his winning bid. Damn it! :devious: Oh well, that's life.

Were you just bidding on that sandblasted one? It went pretty cheap ($41 ?). If you aren't going to snipe, you just need to enter your highest bid and hope it's more than anyone else is willing to pay. If he paid more than you were willing to pay, then it doesn't matter if he sniped you or not. (And no it wasn't me). Probably a reseller if he's bought 3 recently. I got sniped on a series I parts car fairly close to me recently by someone that was obviously a reseller. But he paid more than I was willing to, so...

Sniping is the only way to go on eBay. It is foolish to advertize your interest in a item early in the auction causing a run up in the price.

Decide what you are willing to pay and watch the auction.

If at the end of the auction, the bid is lower than you are willing to pay...........bid appropriately.

If it it has already surpassed your price point, well.......you weren't going to win anyway, so move on to another auction.

Of course, if it is an auction where I am the seller................bid often and bid HIGH! LOL :stupid:

I agree. If I can be at the computer when an item ends, I snipe. This has two effects: since I bid at the last second, I put in the max value I am willing to pay. Thus, if I am willing to pay more than anyone else, I win. If not, then it keeps me from doing anything stupid :stupid: by getting caught up and overbidding, since the auction is over before I can do it!

Exactly my feelings, Mark. Oh sure, I'll grumble a bit if I don't win, but at least I can't fall into the trap of overbidding. All in all, this method works well for me

What is Auction Magic? Is it something that eBay provides to you or software that you bought or developed yourself? Inquiring minds want to know. :)

Auction Magic is an auction manager from pctechzone.com

http://www.pctechzone.com/products.htm

I have been using it for two years, and it is a great thing! The author is very responsive to emails, and consistantly improves the program. It has a great number of features, and has been well worth the registration fee.

PM for more detail if necessary!!

As much as I read about Auction Magic, I can't seem to figure out what it does more that "My Ebay" does. The bid is still a proxy. Sniping still works best if you really want something regardless of price. And even then, your'e really guessing at the end of the auction. I have seen auctions end with three or four snipes within the last twenty seconds. The one feature I find interesting is the ability to track "the going rate" of similar items which is especially good for difficult parts. If you could get the thing to chart prices over a period of time, you could get an idea of what is happening to the overall market, but I think we would all agree that it is generally inflating. A year ago, valve covers were commonly $25 and ash trays were under $50.

Take a look at this bid war. I wonder if the software was involved. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=42606&item=2469198883&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWA%3AIT

With respect to placing a bid early, I might suggest bidding early to let everyone else in our community know you would like the part. Sort of an "I found it first", you might avoid some bad feelings later on. I generally shy away from things if I see one of you bidding. But not always!:devious:

I've probably bid against other 240zorg members without knowing it as its not a given that their ebay username will be the the same as their 240zorg name.

I snipe and I have been sniped. I don't think it will work any other way for the really sought after parts, as early bidding does seem to push up the end price. I try to be by the computer for the auction end of items I really want. But I draw the line when some of the auctions finish 4am UK time.:classic:

I kept getting pipped at the post by the same guy when I was after some d hubcaps last year. These don't turn up for sale too often, and it turned into something of an obsession with me until I took my credit card in hand and decided to put in a higher offer than ususal for a set which ironically I won for a 'relatively' modest price.

I'm sure you will get there in the end Texasz.:classic:

I'll second what Alan said.

Quite often i'll be looking for a certain item that gets listed every once in a while only to find "ship to United States only".

If you email and ask will you ship to Australia, the response is usually, what will you pay for my time at the post office.

This is obviously their choice and i'm not complaining, BUT with the exchange rate as it is at the moment I can buy a lot of parts cheaper on US ebay than I can get them here in Aus.

Just thought i'd add my frustrating 2c.

Alan P.
