Torque Converter Control. Or Lockup Convert. Electrical Lockup converter, such as those used on 80's and above

As far as I know the Z 3 speed is a strieght 3speed auto like the Turbo Hydromatic 350, no Electrical lock up converter. Lockup converters come on OBD I compliant car or trucks. Does your Tranny have any electrical connectors into the Tranny? :devious:

O by the way if this shop in question actually did make reference to a lockup convert for your Zed, steer clear of them. Sound like A holes! Do a tranny service on your trans. Drop the pan, oil, filter. Clean all the gray, gold looking dust of the bottom(inside) of the pan. This is used/shaved metal from the inner workings of your tranny. replace the filter (this will come in a filter kit). Clean the old gasket of the pan rail real nice like. Put a couple of bolts through the pan and gasket (this will also come in the kit) at the conners to try to hold the gasket in place while you start to thread the bolts. Then start threading the rest of them. Button up all bolts even, going all around the pan. Refill if condition worsens tranny needs a rebuild. The torque converter could alos be on it's way out. Take to a GOOD Tranny shop and ask for a diagnosis. Maybe you'll get away with only having to replace the torque converter. Is the fliud level on the dip stick Where it should be? :devious:

Hey frank, the only electrical connections are the modulator valve and the back up switch, normal stuff, so there is no lock up on it. Also I have changed the filter and gasket and redid the oil, so the only other thing could be the torque converter, it doesnt slip gears and when I changed the oil it had you know the normal wear shavings in it so I dont think it could be the tranny and the oil level is good. If it is the torque converter can someone point me in the direction for a cheap one or an inexpensive one or would it just be cheaper getting the 5 speed :D from a bone yard. Thanks guys

Though installing a five speed is pretty easy there is more to it than you might think. You must also install a clutch pedal (which I think requires the entire brake clutch pedal assembly thingy), a master cylinder that bolts to the firewall. And run the line to the slave cylinder on the tranny. Also you will need a different center console. I'm probably forgetting something since I've never done this.

Good luck.

I Have researched alot for installing the tranny and such so I am familiar with what needs to be done just dont have the moolla, I have the right pedal assembly for the clutch pedal and the hole for the clutch master cylinder, so I just need the tranny from a 1978 280z 5 speed and the other necessities like clutch master cylinder, clutch fork and slave cylinder, clutch and throwout bearing and hoses of course, would I have to change the flywheel or can I just use the same one? :D. Thanks for the replys and I think I am just going to install a five speed and just end the mysery of it. Thanks guys

You will have to get a flywheel off a manual shifted 280Z. The auto tranny uses a thin "flexplate" instead of a flywheel. I have heard some recent discussion about the possiblity of the starters being different also but I'm not sure on that. Might be a number of teeth on the gears issue. If you can get all the parts rounded up then you're home free.

This is an interesting thread. It has gone from differentials types to differential ratios to automatic trans problems to A/T to 5 spd conversions. You'll have to bypass the inhibitor wiring which is there to keep the car from starting in any forward gear or reverse with the A/T, you'll need the innter and outer shift boots, as well as the things that you and Ed mention. The console is the same you just need the shift boot and clips for the stick. I think we've left something out but it's been so long since I did such a conversion. That speed thing earlier in the thread kind of worries me, however. Unless the problem is in you trans, it won't go away just because you convert to a 5 spd.
