April 8, 200420 yr Author comment_75929 He replaced the whole ignition system with an MSD one, which has the rev-limiter. I thought there might be one you add onto the stock system. April 8, 200420 yr comment_75967 I don't know if they still make them but back in the day (circa 1988) I had a rotor that had a built in spring. When the rpms reached about 5500-6000 the spring would compress and cut out. It definately limited the revs. Couldn't tell you who made it or anything. April 8, 200420 yr comment_75974 Tomohawk, I have a generic Mallory rev limiter on my car. It is adjustable. You can see it in picture of my interior in my gallery. It is calibrated for an 8 cylinder engine, but through trial and error you find the setting your looking for.I use it now with stock 240 ignition, but it also worked with crank triggered MSD-7 ignition. It's a vintage piece, but I'd try looking at Mallory's web site for more modern version. April 8, 200420 yr Author comment_75985 I thought a rev-limiter might connect to the ign. coil, llike a tacho wire, and sens the RPM. Then it would cut off power or something to limit the revs.thx Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/11153-rev-limiters-on-l28/#findComment-75985 Share on other sites
April 8, 200420 yr comment_75987 Tomohawk, yep thats what they do. Where they connect isn't important. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/11153-rev-limiters-on-l28/#findComment-75987 Share on other sites
April 8, 200420 yr comment_75990 Wait a minute here, have we been had?????Tomohawk, don't you have an automatic? That is your rev limiter. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/11153-rev-limiters-on-l28/#findComment-75990 Share on other sites
April 8, 200420 yr comment_76015 Your right Pancho, I think you got stroked. Heck, the stock 280's I have driven even with a stick were lucky to even get to the red line. April 9, 200420 yr Author comment_76138 I really didn't think one would need a rev limiter on a 280Z. Since it's the thing I know most about right now, I thought I'd look into it as a way to learning more abnout how the engine & electrical stuff works. So if you would humor me, I would like to discuss how this job would be accomplished without totally rewiring everything- like just adding on a thingy if there is one. With the engine having 100k+ miles on it or 25 yrs old, I think I would want to lower the red line substantially- like to 5k? Mine sounds smooth, but you never know if it wants to throw itself through the hood! thx Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/11153-rev-limiters-on-l28/#findComment-76138 Share on other sites
April 9, 200420 yr comment_76171 Tomohawk, The Mallory rev limited I've got is the generic solution you want. It doesn't attach to tach (mine is mechanical), electronic or point ignition is no problem, heck it doesn't even care if your 4,6, or 8 cylinders! If you're really interested search the Mallory web site(try other ignition mfg also) Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/11153-rev-limiters-on-l28/#findComment-76171 Share on other sites
