Posted March 19, 200223 yr comment_4206 My 240 has slot rims with some off brand center caps that I want to replace with Z caps from MSA. The caps that are in there right now are sort of rigged to stay in place with a cardboard ring behind then that keeps them snug. I'm pretty sure the hole diameter is the right size for the caps they have, but what I'm not sure of is how they attach or which type I should use, or if they will work at all. They have two types - screw on and clip on. I know the backs of my rims don't have any holes for screws, so I guess I'd have to tap them, but they are not very thick. Should I use the clip ons? How exactly do they work? What do they clip on to? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/1116-center-caps-help-me-understand/ Share on other sites
March 19, 200223 yr Author comment_4213 Well I guess the point is kind of mute since MSA just told me they don't have the Z emblems (which you have to buy separately :| ) for the center caps in stock, unless someone else knows where I can find 3 3/16" Z center caps. March 19, 200223 yr comment_4215 I have what looks to be the same slot rims on my 240. They were tapped by a PO for the screw-on caps. I replaced the old, discolored caps last year with a set of the MSA ones. I didn't order the "Z" paste-ons - I like the "clean" look, (and besides, I don't care if anyone else can't figure out if my car is a Z). If you're after the original look, why not get the MSA's now and add the "Z" later when they get them in stock? March 19, 200223 yr Author comment_4218 Well there's nothing worng with the caps that are on there now per say. They're clean and scratch free. They're just not original. No biggie - I can live with it for now. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/1116-center-caps-help-me-understand/#findComment-4218 Share on other sites
March 26, 200223 yr comment_4630 Originally the stock Z-car came with steel wheels and hubcaps the mag type wheels are all aftermarket items installed by the dealers, other things are overriders on the bumpers, and the louvers on the side and rear hatches. there were vary few options available on the first three or four years of these cars , one extra was a am and fm radio . Stock was am only. The automatic trans was a option on '71s . One thing I found about z cars, is that things were changed within the model years , as you begin replacing tired parts on the beauty you will find it to your advantage to keep the old one untill you have installed the new part and find that it fits and functions.
