Inner fender mount, direct to caliper, SS braided lines?

Hi All,

I'm having fun and games with nicely seized flare nuts on my brake lines at the moment. In particular the ones on the strut leg mount. Looks like I'm going to have to get new S bend hard lines unless!!! Can you get braided lines that will run directly to the caliper from the inner fender mount to the caliper? All the kits I can find just seem to be replacements for the rubber lines. I've checked the usual suspect websites but with no joy.

Any ideas folks?

I'm not too sure about that. I think the S/S line replaces just the rubber line. You still need to retain the S bend solid line that goes from the caliper to the bracket on the strut. From the strut you need a flexible line to the inner fender bracket (the one by the crossmember mount).

Even if you were able to mount the flexible line from the inner fender directly to the caliper I wouldn't think that there would be enough slack. You would be taking a chance at breaking the line.

If you do have to replace the solid line you can pick one up at any NAPA automotive supply store. Make sure it's the metric kind. Carefully bend into the "S" shape.

An FYI for anyone in the US. I'm doing the 300ZX brake upgrade on my 280Z and the SS brake line they sent me is a direct bolt-on to the caliper. The s-bend is no longer needed. With this being the case, I see no reason that this same brake line couldn't be used on a stock caliper.

SMZ1 Post pictures! I am getting ready to put a '72 in the air and turn it over to take care of everything. I would like to see your brake setup to consider it for my car.

Might try some heat on those flare nuts-it helped me before!

I'm doing the upgrade as a how-to for the Summer 2004 issue of Sport Z Magazine. The weather has been crappy the last couple of weekends so I'm hoping next weekend I will be able to complete the upgrade. I will probally grade this a 4 or 5 on a dificulty level of 1 - 10, 10 being the hardest.I will be doing some extra things, like re-routing my pass side brake line so instead of coming over the tunnel/firewall I will have it run along the front crossmember. These are extra things that will not be part of the how-to unless I put them in as optional things to do. Once the issue is out (around May 23rd) I will be able to post images.The weather has not allowed me to sandblast my engine bay which is what I want to do first before the brake upgrade I plan to do that this Wednesday). I don't want sand getting into any part of the new brakes.I will also be re-routing the rear brake lines so they don't cross over the tunnel/firewall as well. I want the firewall to be superclean with the least amount of lines attached to it or coming out from it.

I find this interesting. You are saying the S/S brake line will go directly from the bracket on the inner fender to the caliper? Are the lines longer than the regular upgrade ones? I'd also be interested in seeing this upgrade. Looking forward to my summer issue.

Sounds good! I just measured my braided lines that I got a couple of years ago from MSA. These go from the strut bracket to the fender bracket and they measure only 12".:classic:

These must be somewhat different from the MSA S/S line that Ed and I have purchased from MSA. For one thing they must have a different fitting on one end to thread "into" the caliper, and secondly they must by longer than the standard S/S lines offered as P/N#24-5121. I think it would be ciool to eliminate that "S" tube.

I think it would be cool too. My only concern would be that over time with all the up's and down's and left's and right's there would be some kind of stress on where the braided line connects to the caliper. It would however be cool if it worked, and it would really, really suck if it didn't.
