pressedsteel Posted April 13, 2004 Share #1 Posted April 13, 2004 Well, I just changed over the title, got my new licence plates and added my recently aquired '71 240z to my insurance policy. I was ready to start driving! Unfortunately, it turns out todays simple oil change revealed approximately a 50/50 split between oil and coolent draining out the crankcase....not what I wanted to hear from my mechanic . After some serious contemplation about reverting to British sprorts cars, I have decided to go ahead with the repair. So, everyone check between the cushions of the sofa and send me your spare change! Seriously, anything I should know while this thing is opened up? Thanks! pressedsteel Posted April 13, 2004 Author Share #3 Posted April 13, 2004 I am having the work done. My mechanical skills end with more minor repairs. I do however have some shop manuels for the car - I would prefer not to open them with my own greasey fingers though! Just want to make sure everything gets done the should while the car is opened up.

Well, do you trust the previous owner, do you know anything about the services that have been done to the car before you bought it? How many miles are on the engine? If it hasn't been done (ever or recently) when the head is removed, it's a good idea to have the head reconditioned. This can involve regrinding the existing valves, or replacing them. Valve guides should be checked for wear and replaced if necessary. It is also a good time to have the timing chain, gears, tensioner replaced if they have not been replaced recently. Of course, all of this costs money, but when done all at once, it can really save money in the long run. If you don't service these areas now, and you end up with valve or timing issues a little later down the road, the head will have to come off again and your paying for the same labor a second time at that point.Just a few things to think about.Let us know what you do, and how it comes out.
