tie rod help needed quick before school starts

that is your stearing rack and you can't take that apart with out a serious pain in the butt. I would consentrate on that Nut! What was wrong with the tie rod? Man, there's nothing worse than rusted nutsROFL .

ok, well i cant get the nut off unless i torch it, the only way to torch it is to take it to school, so i have to remove something to get it to school tomorrow morning

btw the alignment is off, and steering wheel is off, and the nut is rusted so tight that it cant be aligned

Is there no way to remove one of these parts? the one on the right of the attached picture is threaded and looks in good condition i.e. its not rusted so it looks like it could be removed if not i need to find some way to get this thing to school tomorrow

S snake, you don't need to (nor do you want to) take apart the item circled on your picture. It won't allow you to just replace the part you want (you'll end up taking another car apart to replace what you want now).

Slide the rubber boot towards the center of the car. You will see two wrench flats on inner tie rod end..

Look at the direction of the exposed threads........ They should be LEFT-HANDED. Turn the jam nut as though you were tightening a standard R-H nut.

Should come apart if you haven't tightened it so much already.

Sorry, I forgot that the arm is a left hand thread... but actually only one of them is left hand thread I think.

Unless I am remembering wrong, the driver's side is left hand thread and the passenger side is right hand thread. (or was it the other way around...)

(Sides as viewed on a U.S. car... sorry all you RHD folks, but we "Yanks" are so self absorbed...)

The tie rod end is the cast looking thing that has the ball joint in it. At the inside end of it (Which is hidden under your dust boot in the picture) there is a flat on the tie rod end and a lock nut. You have to twist them in opposite directions to get the tie rod end loose.

They didn't look as rusty as mine were, so you might have just been turning them they wrong way.

Had you already changed the other side?

What I said in my first post was to use either PB Blaster of Kroil on the rusted nut and threads . I still stand by it , if you soak it and leave it set for an hour or so and give it a try . If it is still stuck soak it again . you may have to do it several times and maby let it set over night . In all the rusted bolts and nuts I have had to pull apart I have only had one that it dident work. Heating it with a torch is of cource another option . I am still in Beaverton and will help if I can , that is is you are close. Gary

Sorry to dig this thread up guys but I'm at my wits end and wiling to embarrass myself in order to solve it. I'm basically still stuck at the same point surfsnake was... I can't get the damn tie rod end lock nut loose. I've been soaking the nut(s) for a couple of weeks now with PB Blaster Penetrating oil while waiting for parts to arrive and time off of work to finish this everlasting project. I've now looked and looked, grunted and groaned, but I cant get the damned thing loose. Here's the embarrassing part: I've read all of the messages advising that it's a left hand thread, and I've looked at the threads countless times but I still can't get my brain to wrap around the simple idea of which way I should be turning the damned thing! At this point, it's not breaking loose either way I turn it so I'm forced to either extend my wrench for more torque or break out the propane torch to heat it up, neither which I'm crazy about until I'm sure I'm turning it in the right direction! Okay, I realize I'm slow, I'll admit it.

So if someone wants to be kind to a moron today, let me phrase it so I'm perfectly clear:

If I'm sitting on the drivers side, facing the rotor, facing INTO the wheel well, with the tie rod (ball joint end) closest to me, with the wrench on the tie rod end lock nut, to LOOSEN the nut should I be turning it CLOCKWISE or COUNTERCLOCKWISE?

Is it possible to take photo's and post them for us, or is it too much of a pain in the a$$? If I'm understanding you right, then I believe you should be turning your wrench this way -> (clockwise) to loosen.

So if someone wants to be kind to a moron today, let me phrase it so I'm perfectly clear:

If I'm sitting on the drivers side, facing the rotor, facing INTO the wheel well, with the tie rod (ball joint end) closest to me, with the wrench on the tie rod end lock nut, to LOOSEN the nut should I be turning it CLOCKWISE or COUNTERCLOCKWISE?

If you're sitting OUTSIDE of the car on the driver's side, looking towards the motor, then the locknut needs to be turned clockwise to loosen it.
