Stereo for 240

ok I know I said I might not put in a new stereo, but might not also means might.

So I went to Crutchfield to see what in-dash cd player/receiver will fit in my car and got zero results returned.

Can I get some feedback as to what cd player/receiver you people are using? I'm not looking for a monster system, just something current that I will be able to hear over my new exhaust system ::.

sigh - I wasn't asking about speakers or speaker location. I want to know what HU's people are using in their 240's - specifically an in-dash cd player/receiver. I already have a 12 disk changer installed (FM modulated), but the HU is very old and needs to be updated.

Yes I am going to replace the speakers too. What speakers I replace the old ones with will depend on the HU though, so that is where I am starting. But since I'm on the subject - what speaker location do you all use in the back of your Z? Do you use the stock location that points the speakers right at each other (and not towards the front) or do you use something like the box system that MSA sells. I figured the rear speakers pointing towards the front is obviously a better setup, and a box for them would be easy to build.

i was using an Alpine HU in my Z. i dont know what the exact model is right now, ill find the box and let u know.

i also built my own version of the MSA box for two 6x9's...the bass is pretty good without a subwoofer in it.

I believe it was Alphadog who started a thread about speaker locations but I'll be darned if I can find it now. There were some pics of speaker mounting so if you have the patience you might want to search for the thread and take a look at the mounting for the front speakers. I believe the thread was titled sound, not sure which forum though, maybe open forums or Help Me.

Only bad thing about putting a new stereo into a Z-car is the small number of choices in the old style post mountings, everything now is a DIN mount so you may have to do a bit of cutting on your console to mount one.

2manyZ's is getting warmer. What I'm really looking for here is what HU's will fit w/o cutting. I guess I wasn't clear. Read the top post and you'll see I've been to Crutchfield and searched for a compatible HU and got ZERO results. Does this mean there is no HU out there that will fit w/o me cutting?

As for location, I currently have speakers mounted in the bottom front portion of the doors. Would this be the most desirable location for speakers? If that's the case my upgrade is going to be a snap (for speakers anyway).

As far as a CD unit goes , I have never seen one that would mount in the stock location. All the HU I have seen have been a DIN mount.

Couple other thoughts. If you can find a compatible head unit to mount in the stock location why not use a remote changer mounted behind the seat. Or, this might be the better way for more than one reason, why not look into one of the remote HU's whereby you could mount it in a hidden location?? In the glove compartment or wherever. There are a couple companies that make these units for people with older classic cars but don't want to modify the dash to use a new style HU. Something to think about if you really want to spend the money to get a decent stereo. Crutchfield probably has them although I haven't gotten a catalog from them in a while.

BTW, I have the MSA speaker box across the back with an old set of 6x9 Infinity's I had in another car a long, long time ago. Doesn't sound too bad with the rather sad HU that was in the 240 when I bought it. I plan on mounting a couple more Infinity's either under the seats or on the kick panel and use a better head unit when the car is finished. I plan on putting the HU in the console. Luckily I have a spare console to do this with or else I would be looking to mount it in the glove box.

i had an Alpine HU model number CDE-7856.

i had no apparent problem slipping it into the stock hole without cutting, but no guarantees. i dont know if the hole was previously modified or not (but the radio did look like the stock radio)

if it doesnt fit, just take her back.

I have a Alpine AM/FM/CD (model CDE-7853) mounted in my 72 240Z. It comes with a special mounting bracket that slides into the opening and locks. Then, you just slide the head unit in and

it locks into the bracket mounting (very easy to remove by moving two pins). Now, you must file just a little of the original opening by using a flat file (does not require a lot as I recall). The stock radio with faceplate can still be used with no problem if you want to return to stock. By the way the radio faceplate is removabvle.

I installed two Alpine 6x9 speakers in the M/S enclosure which fits in the rear hatch area, replaceing the taillight interior trim cover.

Love the system.

Hi, as Ken and Grantman do I run an Alpine CD HU. It has 4 RCA outlets and a 4x35W output. It fits snug into the console and has plenty of great features. The unit is around 2-3yrs old but can be bought 2nd hand still. I made my own box speakers up in the boot which sit in front of the standard holes in the rear quarterpanel. The 6x9 enclosed in such a small area in the back hatch give great bass. I'm very happy with it............

I have a Pioneer 4x45 in mine but I wouldn't know if it actually fits the stock location as before that there was an Alpine tape deck and I didnt install it myself...
