OK all you Z pros.

I adapted a quartz clock to fit the dash of my '72'.

Fits good, looks orig. and keeps perfect time- - - - - -while the car is running and for a short period after the car is parked and turned off.

There was no rewiring to plug it in to the harness.

It worked for about 3 days when first installed, while sitting in my garage, then stopped.

When to the Z-Fest, it ran and kept time. Went to drive it last night after sitting for a couple of weeks. It had stopped and now it is still running this morning.

Is it possessed? Or is it just that the quartz needs more than what the old clock would have needed to continue to run?

I'm voting for possessed.

Those little quartz clocks run just fine on a couple of AA batteries for years. I'm sure they draw far less power than the original motor driving gears. Even then a car battery should have ample amperage to run a clock. How did you adapt the mechanism to run off of 12 volts (or did you find a 12 volt quartz clock)?

It came out of a later model Z.

All I did was a small adjustment to the orig. clock's bezel so that it would fit the clock case.

Snip off the plug and replace with a male and a female barrel plug, and plug it into the orig. harness..

Since the clock runs normally when you drive it, and stops when the car is not driven points to the source of power to the clock being interrupted.

Have you checked that the power to the clock is in fact, continuous?

Ah, sorry. I misunderstood. I thought you simply replaced the internal mechanism of an original clock.

I find it strange that it runs for a short period of time after the car is turned off. Escanlon's opinion seems logical - that the power is being cut off. Perhaps you can verify that it runs for a short time (and even see if that time is consistent).

I have a quartz clock, here in my office, that has a psycodelic light show. A gear reduction motor turns a color wheel. If I turn the color wheel off, the clock stops in a few hours. I surmised that the clock was "sticky" and needed the vibration of the display motor to keep running.

Mayhaps that is what's happening in this case? park the car and the clock sticks?

I've done the same thing and the same thing pretty much happens. Since I haven't driven the car much I just figured that I had a wiring problem in my adaption harness, perhaps not! It's pretty low on my "get looked at list" so it is still doing it's thing. Oh well, no answer for you but at least you know that you are not alone :)
