Hey guys, my 280z (1978) needs like 10+ key turns to turn over, i cant hear the pump buzzing untill about 5 trys, then it still takes a couple, it pops, sputters then finally starts, idles rough and a little higher than normal and when i give it gas it shudders and sometimes dies. Do i need a new fuel pump? i looked in the fuel line when i replaced the fuel filter and i saw some stuff in it! what should i do? Thanks alot.

Yes, its Fuel Injected.

Didn't we go through this before? In several other threads that you started about this car? If I remember correctly it was a 1979 ZX in the other threads and now it's a 1978 280Z? And we did talk about several things that could cause the problems you describe and now you've come full circle to what is basically where you began. Is this the same car or a different car? If it is the same car, and you followed the previous suggestions, then you need to look at the possibility that your gas tank is clogged from sitting for too long.

Its actually a 78 Z, sorry but when i got it i knew nothing at all about them, and i didnt add that the P.O told me it may need a new one, i didnt see any replys that solved my problem.

1. Get your multimeter ready (if you don't have one, buy one)

2. Get a helper

2a. Remove the cover on your air flow meter. It's located a few inches from your throttle body.

3. Set the multimeter to read volts and place the leads on the terminals of the fuel pump. The fuel pump is located at the rear passenger side of the car near the gas tank.

4. Have the helper turn the key to the "on" position. Do not start.

5. Read the voltage at the fuel pump terminals. It should be zero.

6. Have the helper turn the wheel in the AFM clockwise.

7. You should now hear the pump running and read somewhere around 12V.

Conclusions:

12V but pump not running - the pump is dead

12V and pump is running - everything is working, this is not your problem

No 12V - Electrical problem
