Gear shift wont engage

Recommended Posts

OK, someone smarter than me needs to help me here. I had my 240 in storage for 16 months. Ran great before I stored it. Took a bit, but I finally got it started this weekend only to find out that it will not go in gear now??

pushing the shifter towards first makes the car rock forward a little. No grinding noise. Trying for reverse and you are grinding serious gears.

Didn't do that before I stored it. Anybody have any idea what is up? I am guessing something with vacuum? But I know nothing about the working of the transmission.

It's been years since I replaced my clutch slave cylinder so I can't remember many details of its operation. I think you should be able to see the actuating arm move when you (well, someone else) steps on the clutch. If it doesn't move then clearly the clutch is staying engaged hence the inability to shift. It may be that the reservoir is full but some air has entered the system.

I'm sure someone else here can jump in with a more detailed diagnosis.

bet the clutch disc is stuck to the flywheel i have seen it before. roll the car to a safe place and put the car in 1st gear hold the brake and clutch and try to start it. it should release

Thanks all! I just read in a manual about the fly wheel freezing up when sitting. That was the deal, put it in gear start it, then let the clutch out slowly to "break" it.

I had to tug on it with a tow chain to "break" the brakes too. Poor baby is a rust magnet if left alone too long!
