Finally got the car! 76 280Z

Recommended Posts

Got it off e-bay for $1200 in LA.

Took a 6 hour bus ride to get there, looked over the car and drove it home in 5.

Brakes are great, tranny is smooth (4spd), Engine seems good, MAFS is kinda shot (coughs at low RPMs when engine is cold, and can see the intake jump when hood is popped and you throttle the gas a bit)

Some engine work done by previous owner (a lady) and she can't recall what was done. mechanic said do it....and she paid up.

Exhaust seems tight, but minor leaks come from the manifold gaskets, a puff comes out every now and then by the 6th cylinder.

Body is ehhh.....right rear quarter seems to be a bondo playground, and the door has a decent ripple in it. Right rear fender also has rust on the lip. the outside passenger floor board seems the worst. deep rust on the outside. Need to see how bad.

She drove great and it was the first time I have driven that far. Surprisingly comfortable for the age of car. I am impressed with it. Of course I kept it below 80 most of the way just to be safe and usually kept it at 70 or so.

I did notice that it DOES NOT LIKE HILLS. Is this a normal issue? Talking LONG steady incline.

Being a minimal knowledge mechanic, what should I look for? Or what should I have a more knowledgeable professional look for on the engine?

Also got about 100 miles for 1/2 tank on the freeway, but I get less than that in city. I think the tank my have issues.....

Any tips, comments and/or advice appreciated.
