I cant figure out how it cost Nissan so much to restore them.

Mabye if they restored them and hid them away in a warehouse for another 30 years they would be more highly sort after. But from looking at all the Zs on EBAY in the US there are plenty of good restored Zs for half that price.

Which parts did they restore and which parts did they replace on there factory restorations?

Labor and expensive OEM parts. Nissan hired a couple of shops in California to do all of the work. They used up a lot of Nissan's remaining parts inventory for things like dashboards. I believe this is one of the reasons that the program ended soon: they just didn't have the parts.

Keep in mind that these were very thorough restorations and I'm sure the fact that they're so-called factory restorations makes them worth more even if the work was the same as what someone else did.
