240z Fuel Overflow

NR240

Recommended Posts

I own a 1973 Australian delivered 240Z.

I ask the following question????

When cornering hard left in the 240Z, fuel leaks out of the "overflow" tube that exits from the "Petrol filler neck" which is the main tube used when filling the car. The "overflow" tube is a breather tube, and sits behind the rear wheel. Due to the forces of inertia, during hard left turn, the fuel in the tank is pushed to the right and up the filler neck, where it enters this "overflow" tube and ends up spraying out the back of the car!. Presents a problem when friends are following you!!.

Can I block this hose off? or do I need to get a one-way valve to allow the tank to breathe?.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

This problem is my single biggest gripe with the Aus-spec 240Z.

Why couldn't we have a sealed tank & a carbon canister like the 260Z? It would have made life much easier....

I'm considering a few different options:

Foam-filling the tank (longevity issues?)

Fitting dual 1-way valves to provide a 'resistant' flow to gasses & hopefully reduce the issue.

OR

Fit a fuel-cell.

nR 240 I am from the us so our cars are some what different . Do you have a vent line that runs to the front of he car from the tank? Does the fuel tank have a small outlet on the tank above the supply and return ports . On our cars there is a small pencil size port coming from the top edge of the tank in this area. If you do have this port and it is blocked off you can run a small line to the front of the car and up the firewall as a vent and maby connect it to a carbon tank or to the air cleaner for fresh air. Then use a NON vented gas cap on the filler neck. You only need a small vent line to supply air to the tank as fuel is removed from the engine. We have a valve mounted in the engine bay that is a one way valve that only allows air in and none out for this function. This is just a thought for you to look into for possabilities. My 2 cts.
