Posted May 15, 200420 yr comment_81153 Hello everyone.....my 71 Z has recently started having headlight problems. It takes several seconds for them to come on and amp gauge bounces around when they are on. However, the lights don't flicker. Suspect a bad relay but switch may be the problem...any thoughts on this??? I have owned the car since 73 and this is a new one on me. May 15, 200420 yr comment_81163 The bouncing amp guage could be a problem with the Voltage Regulator, start by replacing it (especially if it's 30 yrs old). Have the alternator checked out or replace it if it's over 10 yrs old. How does the battery look? Is there any corroded build up on the terminals? Check your wireing especially at the connectors make sure they are all clean. It could also be your switch (the one on the steering column). Do a search and you should be able to come up with some more info on this. I remember a member here sucessfully taking his switch appart and fixing it.Good luck. May 17, 200420 yr Author comment_81427 Thanks much!!!! Most of the parts on the car are almost new. I used to have a transistorized (bullet-proof) voltage regulator but it disappeared during service at a Nissan Dealership. I had forgotten what a pain the stock voltage regulators are. Thanks for the reminder....will check all you suggested. I have had the car since '73 and have rebuilt it 3 or 4 times...did most of the work myself.
