$5000 for a 1970 240z??

Went and took a look at a number 4xxx 1970 240z in houston yesterday. The car has just over 100000 miles. The things i spotted while looking at it were: un-original 5-spd tranny, rear quarter emblems shaved, unoriginal hood, 280zx side view mirrors, car looks to have been lightly tapped in the rear at some point (the driver side bumper guard slightly pushed into rear body, along with the body under the bumper having some dents/irregularities), couple minor dings here and there. Rusted through holes in the front inner fenders above the frame rails and rust on the driver side dogleg. Both of which would be repaired before purchase. The battery tray, rear deck panel and floor panels all look healthy. Is $5000 to steep a price for this car?

That seems too steep to me. How did it drive? What is the interior condition like? How is the rust going to be repaired? The body does not sound all that great, and 5000 dollars should get you a lot more. They might be asking that price only because it is a 1970 and they think they can get more for it. Maybe someone else can submit their words of wisdom, but from your description I would have to say pass, unless they want to go down in price.

The interior was in pretty good condition, seats were straight, there was one crack on the passenger side dash, was all original still though. The motor seemed to be in good mechanical condition and it drove good, brakes took forever to slow the car but since this is the first 30 year old car ive driven i dont have another one to compare. The rust would be fixed properly by welding new metal. Part of the inflated price is due to the fact that it is being sold by a reputed houston z-car specialist and he repeatedly told me "we stand behind our work". The price seems a little steep to me too. Just wondering what you more knowledgable z-heads would think.

Your deecription doesn't even come close to providing enough information to base a realistic guess of the value of the car.

Like Ben said, How will the rust be repaired? Painted, etc?

Emblems "shaved"? Any other custom bodywork?

Old and tired engine, or Rebello 3.0L monster?

If you can provide "DETAIL" pictures of all area's of the car, descriptions of the "unoriginal" pieces, (is the trans freshly rebuilt, or a junkyard piece?)

I think 5K is steep as well.

Rust holes will be fixed? How exactly? I'd rather pay less & take it as is, then do it myself, to be sure it's done right!

Hate to see some a$$ do a quickie bondo-fix and pass it off as good:finger:

That said, early Z values are/have been climbing steadily, but cars with "issues" should still be discounted a good deal.

Maybe you can search some of Carl Beck's comments on Z car value as of late.

As the car stands right now and given your description I would tend to agree that 5k is a little high. Is the reputable Z-car specialist going to fix the rust? How big are the holes on the inner fender? I would think that if there is rust there then there HAS to be rust elsewhere. Does the floorpan have "new" undercoating? What about the rear hatch? Has it been replaced with a later hatch?

Since nothing stuck out in your mind about the car, we can only asume it isn't in the best of shape. By your own admission, you haven't driven a 30+ year old car before. Offer the guy $2200-$3000 cash in hand, if he doesn't take it, he is hoping PT Barnum was right! File that info away, and buy from someone else.

I would think 5K would get you a "healthy driver" 240Z needing few parts, and a lot of elbow grease. A lightly modified car wold not be worth what an:stupid: original car would be, unless it had the modifictions you were going to put on the car anyway.

I must agree with everyone else, $5000 is too high. For that price you can get one in better condition pretty easily, or pay less for one in comparable condition then use the savings to fix her up the way you want.

Let's put it this way. If you are going to buy a 240-Z today - you buy the best one you can find - and you pay the extra money right up front.

Do not buy a car thinking that you will only need to put a few thousand more dollars into it.

For Example (the car listed below is sold of course) - Had you put just $2,500.00 with that $5K your thinking of.. you could have bought this 240-Z.

One Owner, NO RUST.. low mileage - -all original (never wrecked,never repainted etc).

Car's like this are getting very hard to find.. but they can be found. Do you only want a 70 or would a very nice 71 do just as well?
