LOL I'm not even thinking of a proper resto on my car and I have 7 large plastic tubs of "stuff", and set of wheels, set of seats, and a E31 cylinder head in the extra bedroom. A front bumper, 2 grilles, 2 headlight extensions, and several other boxes of stuff in my living room! Oh, and 3 more plastic tubs of parts (and my tools and manuals) over at the garage I borrow to work on the car.

Spare engine and trans, and at least 1-1/2 sets of larger suspension parts in the shed also.

If you have the storage space, I say go for it! Strip the car down to the last nut & bolt, then get rid of the shell (be sure to put all the small parts in plastic bags or containers and label them appropriately). With rusted frame rails, floors, etc... it would end up costing you a small fortune to repair. As others have mentioned, it would be better to spend a bit more for a more solid car. Then again, maybe you could sell it on e-bay, especially if the rear quarter panels are solid (or you may want to keep it, then). I've come across Z's in the salvage yards that have been cut in half, cut in quarters, etc...apparently for someone who needed to section a car to repair it. Whenever I go to the salvage yards I tend to buy any usable part I can find, even if I don't need it for my Z, never know when I might get another one!

Consider the value of the parts you could salvage from the vehicle, especially those that you can't get new replacements for or that have high price tags. Even at $300 there may be enough good parts that would be worth much more.

kenz240z is thinking like I do. I like the posts about parts cars. So much is interchangable. I'm like Carl, I have a 2 stall garage and its full of parts. Plus more in the basement and some in storage. Its amazing how much "space" a stripped down 71 Z can take up. Plus the spare motors, trannys, diffs, and the other bigger items us Z nuts hold on to.

If you can get the car for a bill. Get it. Strip it down, you'll learn quite a lot from that project alone. Get Wick Humble's book on Z's and read it from cover to cover. Helped me tons. When you find that "right" car then those parts will come in handy.

I like to refinish a saved part to like new condition then install it on one of my drivers. In the long run it actually saves me money.

My .02

If you do not have any body shop and or welding skill, just the floor pans and frame rails alone will cost you around 1500+ parts just to have them done.

That is if you can find somone willing to do it!

So now you have about 2k+, invested, you could have a decent Z for that price.

Look at it like that! Id personally pass, unless you get it dirt cheap and keep it as a parts car.

Hey dont let this get you down It can be done. I mean look at my z in the gallory (the black one.) the inteiors ok the floors are gone. No engine or tranny.

But i can work medal and weld. Ive got someone for paint.

The trick is to get ready to have a heap in your yard for atleast a year while you track down parts.(and money)

The peaple on this sight sell some pretty good parts at reasonable prices.

It all comes down to what you want. If you want this z then buy it. But be prepaired to work on it for awhile.:classic:

yeah ok i think what im going to do is basicly offer him a few bucks.. ill try working up to about 300. and see what hapends

its at a shop and the guy no longer works there.. and the ower seemed to peek his ears when i asked about it..which probably means he wants it gone but the guy doesnt have a garage to put it in.. so hopefully he'll be somewhat desprate..

and worst case I sell it and make my 3 bills back which im sure shouldbt be too much problem.. so should take most of the risk out of it for me

If you can go and take some pictures of it and post them here. We would be able to tell you what's good and what's not.

BTW you mentioned doing this car in a year. I would assume that you have a heated garage, correct?

  • 2 years later...

I bought two cars in the same condition that you are talking about for a total of $500. My plan was to build one out of the two. I got the motor and drivetrain done and then started on the body and realized how much work I had and how much I did not know. All I can say is good luck.
