Fuel Pump - Fuel Injector wiring

My son just bought a 280Z. (can't remember the year - first year they were fuel injected) He thought it would be an easy fix to get this car up and running... The previous owner had attempted some "half-fast" repairs and we're going to need a lot of help.

Most pressing are 2 points I hope someone here can help with:

1 - No power to fuel pump.

(At least I think...) The two wires connected are supposed to deliver 12 volts with ignition switch on? I can't find a fuse for the fuel pump. Is there a fuse? Is there a relay? Is it safe to "jump" the fuel pump? Can I connect it to a 12v source to see if it spins? What is the polarity?

2 - The former owner re-wired the fuel injectors.

He cut off the connectors & re-did the wiring using crimp connectors & spades... (sigh...) I bought 6 new connectors. These connectors have polarity? How do I tell if the previous jerk (oops, owner) has them wired properly (cough, cough)? Is there a way to test the wire pair to the injectors to make sure I get the wiring re-done properly?

All my sports car experience is with early '70's MG's (Midget) & Triumphs (TR6). Since then I've owned Ford's and recently numerous Nissan's for myself & my kids (2 late '90's Maxima's, 2 mid '90's Altima's, a '90 240sx, & a '00 Xterra) I used to like working on these things but I get grumpy busting up my knuckles in my old age...

I would appreciate any wisdom you can impart. I'd really like to get this car OUT of my garage so I can get my Explorer back in... (this is Arizona and my Explorer is dark blue - do the heat gain calculations)

Let us know as there are several, minute, but several differences. The FI wiring is close to the same in all, but Nissan did make a few changes between the years....

Yes, there is a relay.... the year will tell the location of such...

75-77 is up underneath the drivers side dash, the 78 should be on the relay bracket in the engine compartment.

The injectors are simply a small 'solenoid', allowing fuel to pass when the the signal is given. A FSM (factory service manual) has all the wires labled on the FI side, so ohming it out, although tedious, will rewire you correctly.

The Z in question is a 1976. Thanks for posting the pic. I understand from your post that the relay will be basically the same for the '76 model year. I'll have a look under the dash.

Guess I'd better find a Shop Manual... Is the CD (microfiche) offered on this site valuable?

Not sure, that's on my to buy list.... you can pick up hard copy FSM's off eBay at least once a week.... just depends how much ya wanna pay...

As for the wiring diagram, ZCarCreations has complementary wiring diagrams in a pdf format uploaded on their site. Pretty sure the '75-'76 is the same.

Note: older versions of adobe won't allow you to 'save as'

Also, when your key is in the 'on', open the flap up on the AFM. you should be able to hear the fuel pump buzz if everything is ok (and hooked up properly).
