All my Z's have the seat recline lever on the side nearest the door. The passenger seat lever is on the right of the seat, the drivers seat lever is on the left of the seat. This is not correct?

I don't think the drivers seat is original. If you think about it, in many cases the drivers seat get a lot of abuse (because it always has a butt on it!!!) but a passenger seat can be left relatively untouched.

Me thinks someone has had a worn-out drivers seat and at some point replaced it with a good passenger seat from another car.

It would be if the seat was transplanted intact.

The seats really are made up of several separate components. The seat bottom and seat back appear to be the same on both sides. The recline mechansism is part of one of the two hinge brackets that connect the seat back to the seat bottom. There are also two sliding brackets that mount the seat to the floor. One of these brackets has a sliding lever.

If your driver's side seat was torn up and you had an extra passenger seat it would be easy enough to swap all of the brackets and it would look proper.

Vicky is right the seat adjusters should be on the door side of the seats. I have never seen a car with the adjusters next to the tunnel.

I submit for your inspection the attached screen print from the Nissan Z Parts Microfiche.

I am surprised that that Vickys Z Store resto car has the seats placed as she describes. All of the 3 240Z's that I've owned since 1975 have had the seats placed as shown in the attachment.

I really can't tell anything from that diagram Carl. Tried to enlarge it but I couldn't. Went and looked at the owners manual on the 72 240Z and it shows the seat recline lever on the outside of the seat nearest the door (as they are on the car). Would be interested to have others check their owners manual to see what position they show the lever as being. This is quite interesting, no?

Interesting. Aren't there two different types of mechanisms? I thought the mechanism with the big fat knob that you twist was from the earlier cars yet that diagram shows it as up to July of 1973. Mine are the kind that have a small lever on the side of the seat bottom. According to the production changes list over at zhome.com these flip-forward seats were introduced around 10/71 (although mine are 9/71).

Hmm, the attachment fills the entire screen on my computer, but maybe this one will work better.

As for being interesting........not really (to me). As long as it is there and works what diff does it make (unless you are being judged at the convention)?
