in my search for a 240z one of my requirerments is air conditioning.90% of cars with A/C doesn't work.mostly seller says only needs this or that.(usually a charge)making it seem like an easy fix. if it was an easy fix you'd think seller would do the repair before hand. how difficult is it to have operable air and keeping it working cold? is the old technology obsolete or can new technology be adapted?should i dismiss a potential z because it doesn't have air? any opinions?

Most A/C units installed into 240's are aftermarket and usually dealer options. Not all 240's had this option so if you find one with A/C your lucky.

They are close to 30 years old and have the old piston type compressor (over by the fuel pump). I believe that when someone tells you that it only needs a recharge it's because it has a leak somewhere. Usually the hoses are the culprit because they are over 30 years old but you never know. Regardless of what you get if the hoses haven't been replaced in 30 years, it's time.

You can "upgrade" your A/C system by getting a rotary compressor from a 81-83 280ZX. The mounting bracket bolts up to where the air pump goes. There are also rotary units out there that bolt up to the bracket that goes by the fuel pump.

If you find a Z with air consider it a plus. If it works that would be a plus & bonus. Either way maintanance is required and the hoses are the first to go. To replace the hoses your looking at $400.00 US easy.

Repairing the old is not terribly difficult, but the old a/c is not terribly effective either! I have had 11 240Zs, all had A/C, and only one system was up to the task of cooling the car to my expectation(combatting coastal Georgia heat and humidity).

I am currently resurrecting a '72, and working on a system with all new technology that is no more obtrusive than the old dealer installed units, and works based entirely on the heater panel controls with no new holes-I want it to look factory, but work like the AC in my 2003 S80-able to get and keep the car uncomfortably cold on the hottest day in direct sunlight-without overheating the engine.

As I get there, I will detail the system and installation.
