Posted June 4, 200420 yr comment_83930 Hi, folks, I got big trouble again. When I drove my 72 240z first gear as fast as 45miles per mile(probable over 6000rpm with my 72 240z with '83zx 5 speed trans and r-200, 3.5 or 3.7 differential from 80s zx). I heard fairly loud bang sound from the engine or trans area. I don't know exact where, but I saw small amount of smoke coming from somewhere throught the vents from hood or side/front of the hood. I also smelled burning rubber like odor too. I thought engine belt burned out or someting. The engine runs and I hope it is OK, but I am not be able to engage any gear. Only stuck in the one gear, but I can drive and drove home by using 4th gear without changing any gear. I can change a gear if I turn ignition off. Do you folks think any thougt? The trans is rebuilt on 20.000 miles and the clutch is from either 1988 300zx 2x2 or center force cluth. I replaced clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder recently.jaynez31:cry: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/12059-not-be-able-to-engage-any-gear-after-power-drive/ Share on other sites
June 4, 200420 yr comment_83979 Hmmm.So you cant change gear with the engine running? But you can change gear with the engine off.Can you put it in gear press the clutch in and start the engine? or does that make the car lurch forward?I think maybe your clutch exploded, and isnt disengaging any more. June 4, 200420 yr Author comment_84002 My car put it in gear press the clutch in and be able to start the engine, but did not make the car lurch forward.I start the engine this morning, scraping and dragging sound comingt from the trans mission area. The engine runs sound good.It probably the clutch or clutch assembly exploded, but how it could happen? I just ran about 6000rpm, is this cause clutch explosion? Quite easily, depending on how often you rev it out to 6000, how old the clutch plate or pressure plate is, maybe it was a cheapo brand, or maybe you poped one too many burnouts with it. I dont know. Eitherway, you are going to have to drop the gearbox out to start investigating the problem. If you are lucky, it's just the clutch. If you are unlucky, it's the gearbox. June 5, 200420 yr comment_84054 I'm thinking the throw out bearing blew up/burned out. The car doesn't lurch when started with clutch pedaal depressed (so there is still a clutch disk). When engine is running grinding noise (seized/blown throw out bearing). Can't select a gear while running (trying to force seized/blown bearing against pressure plate harder. Probbably sounds like grinding the actual gears.)Sorry, but the guys are right------you will have to drop the tranny. June 9, 200420 yr Author comment_84481 1. Experiment! What's kind of screming sound the L28 with 2 1/2inch, middle glass pack and rear dynamax muffler(and tripple weber, 6 in 1 header) produceROFL I might say that the car's limits2. Investigation+ Since I failed to install the tach from Autometer, and faild to working condition of the stock tach which mated with MSD ignition and 78 distrubutor, I needed to feel and searching out if my differential(R-200) has which ratio(3.3, 3.5, 3.7 or 3.9). So,I tried if driving 45miles, then 6900 rpm(r-200, 3.7), 6652 rpm(r-200 3.5), 6313 rpm(r-200 3.3) or 7000rpm(r-200 3.9).I will bring local trans shop, he will charge 175 dollar plus parts. Or maybe, I will drop the trans and finding out what happened, but I don't have guts to do the job.just like my 72 240z, I am from Japan too, what's heck.jaynez31this is pics:http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=11087&password=&sort=7&size=medium&thecat=500 Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/12059-not-be-able-to-engage-any-gear-after-power-drive/#findComment-84481 Share on other sites
