Carb linkage cleaning

It's possible that my linkage for my SU's are a bit gunked, causing me idle problems. Cleaning the linkage should be an easy enough affair, and I always say (in reference to working on cars) try the easiest solutions first.

What should I use to clean the linkage? Is there some kind of spray I can buy or do I have to actually do it by hand? Also, what's the best lubricant for after I clean it?

I just use plain old carb cleaner and shop rags (sometimes paper towels as well) to clean the linkage. For lubrication, I use the same lithium-based grease that we use around here to pack wheel bearings. The current can is Coastal Uniplex Hi-Temp Grease - I believe my son picked it up at the local NAPA parts store. (Back of the can says it is suitable for, among other things, backhoe hinge pins, so if you also have a backhoe.........).

I have found a pair of needle nose slipped under the linkage works great for popping them loose.The wedge of the tool will slip it right off.You may also check your throttle return springs,they get tired/stretched. Daniel

I have had problems with sticky throttle shafts myself which is usally what will stick first not the linkage. The linkage really is only a ball and socket connection so i doubt that the friction is coming from there. There are seals that surround that throttle shafts that seal the carb body and linkage from leaking vacum that often go bad. If these seals start to deform then that could be the case. My sticky problem came from a different reason however. My new ZTherepy carbs had a bit too much locktight in around the the bearings in the throttle shafts. ZTHerepy puts that stuff in to make sure no vacum is leaked out in the long term. So i just used stronger springs which loosened them up. Every now and then i'll spray the linkage and springs down with WD40 which keeps them clean and friction free. I've been doing that for about a year and have had no problems. Stronger springs can be had from ZTHerepy. Didn't you say that you ordered the SU video, i think once you have that in your hands all will be come clear.

Don't forget to clean and lube the "bellcrank" on the firewall. This has been one of the places I have had the most trouble with sticking linkages, it comes off very easily. Just pop off the linkages and then remove the snap ring on top, and pull it up off the pivot. Clean it up and grease it like the rest of the linkage. I have found all sorts of junk and even some rust on there in different cars.
