Lost Keys

Hello All,

The Z has been parked for the last few months, and I was going to bring it into the garage for some TLC this weekend, I went to grab the keys and they're not there. The car is unlocked in the driveway so I can get into it, but I need to know what I can to do to go about having new keys made.

I saw a post on this forum, about getting a code number off of a door lock cylinder and taking it to a locksmith to get new keys made. Is this what I should do or is there another way?

I'm in San Jose CA if anyone can recommend a locksmith that they have used with success.

Hi Greg,

Using the key code is the easiest way. Just find a locksmith with the key cutter.

A nissan dealer should have one also.

The only other way I know of is to have a locksmith do it the old fashion way, which is to trial fit a key blank, cut, retry, cut, etc. That way takes some time and could cost alot more than having the code.

Find the key code if you can. My 72 had a sticker in the glove box with the code, try there.

Ive got the same problem with mine. I went to a nissan dealer just to see what they would do. The said a 71 what? So off the smithes i go .

First of all, are you absolutely SURE that the keys are gone? They may have ended up in the pocket of a coverall you wore last time you played with the engine, or in a jacket....get my drift? Once you are completely and positively sure that they are gone and a new set must be made, then approach a locksmith.

As posted, many times the dealers will look at the Z and say, Gee, I remember my dad having one. There are some very good dealers out there though, so check with them. However if they insist that the Z is only a 350 then back away carefully.

Now, to me first determine if all 5 locks were keyed the same. The two doors, the hatch, ignition and glove compartment are all supposed to be keyed the same on the 240. (Someone correct me for other models.) With that in mind, take out the lock in the glove compartment (2 phillipss screws) and have the locksmith cut new keys to that. The lock usually has the code stamped on the side.

Enrique - thanks for the info, I am very certain that the keys are gone, I turned the house upside down yesterday looking for them, and could find them anywhere.

I know from before that all of the locks on my Z are the same, the core in the glove box will be very easy to get to, I'll post my results in a few days, either success, or failure.

I just did that...losy my key! Thank God my finace had a spare that I had made and given to him . What I did find interesting is that the key from my 1979 280ZX, which I parted with when I was 19, will open the rear hatch and start the car but won't unlock the doors. It's actually kinda scary to think that any old Z key will start this car! Hell, the driver side door won't lock anyway so if someone REALLY wants in the car.............

My 280Z had the key code on the inside of the glove compartment lid.

If youy get your code, write it down & keep it somewhere safe.
