Posted June 8, 200420 yr comment_84465 On my parts car I'd like to remove the oil pan, crank, pistons, rods, etc without removing the block from the car. How is this done and is it worth the effort (I'm just selling the parts to fund my project)...time vs. money for the parts I sell?I already have the head off, removing the water pump and front cover should not be a problem. Oh and the radiator is out also so this will not be in my way either, nor will the A/C compressor or alternator as those have also been removed.Any help would be great!! Thank you in advance. :classic: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/12117-taking-the-block-apart-while-still-in-the-car/ Share on other sites
June 9, 200420 yr comment_84473 You'll have to raise the engine off the motor mounts in order to get the oil pan off.I don't know if you'll be able to get the crank out from the bottom without jacking the block real high. Also, there is probably a good chance to bang up the crank trying it this way. Of couse if you are just selling parts you probably don't care much if it gets screwed up. Not completely true, if it were to be damaged I wouldn't sell it I'd end up trashing it that is unless it was repairable but the buyer would know it's condition up front. It sucks when you get screwed by a seller who does not tell you these kinds of things (first hand experience talking here).Well that does sound like WAY more work than I was hoping for, maybe I'll pass on doing this. June 9, 200420 yr comment_84498 texasz, it would actually be work trying to pull the rotating assemble out in the care while not causing the parts any damage, than just removing the engine all together. It might sound like more trouble to remove the engine, but it's not compared to remove the parts in the manner that you asked about. Once the engine is out you can have you way wiht it in any manner you need, with out all the suffering would go through otherwise. :devious: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/12117-taking-the-block-apart-while-still-in-the-car/#findComment-84498 Share on other sites
June 9, 200420 yr comment_84504 The engine and tranny are so easy and quick to pull as a unit and 100 times easier to work on outside the car that doing it any other way doesn't make much sense. Unless you can't or don't want to afford the rental of a puller. Victor. June 9, 200420 yr comment_84519 The consensus is right. It really is easier to pull the engine out as a whole, then take it apart. Keep in mind, now that you have the head off, you'll have a harder time pulling the block out of the car since the hangers are typically mounted on the head. Where would you mount the hoist chains? On a side note, if this is an L24 block, in my experience there is not much of a market for selling the parts. I had one that was for sale for over a year that I could not get rid of, parts or whole. There was nothing wrong with it, other than it hadn't run in awhile. I ended up giving it away to get my garage space back. I also recently sold my running '73 L24, with recorded dyno paperwork, for only $100. I had it for sale for over 6 months. L24's just don't bring much money these days. Otherwise, I wouldn't waste my time because this is what I figured.
