5spd gearbox codes

I would like to add my voice to this question!

I have a NISSAN 5 speed tied to a worked 3litre(out from 2.8L) that has a 1:1 (ie NOT overdrive) 5th gear. Any ideas on what it could be? Came from a rally comp. workshop many(15+) years ago, and was professionally put together

g72s20: The ratios in my box sound sorta like yours too. I just sat down and worked out the approximate gear ratios going off the cars speed at a given rpm and my diff ratio (3.7:1). This is what I came up with.

3.5:1

2.1:1

1.3:1

1.15:1

1:1

Any ideas what this box would be? It'll be coming out within a month, so I'll be able to get any numbers stamped onto the box then. Judging by the speedo sender "thingy" :) still in the box, it came out of something with a tallish diff.....something in the low 3's.

Oh yeah it's a bit shagged, but would anyone be interested in a short ratio box like this?

Justin, your close ratio box could be worth a bit more than the usual, depends a lot on condition and finding someone after those ratios. Good for a circuit race car.

I've got a RB20DET box here that is going behind the FJ20 eventually. The case has cast into it 'RP71C #2', the ratios are 3.32, 1.9, 1.31, 1.0 and .838.

Cool cool. Ahh well, we'll see what it turns out to be. If it's worth something to someone then I'll sell it off. Otherwise it'll live behind my old motor in it's new home ....the basher ute! :D

g72s20, Datsun competition had a few direct drive boxes available to racers.

Three of the boxes were for track use and one was for ralley use. They also had (2?) close ratio 5 speeds with over drive 5th gears.

I have one of the track racing 5 speeds and I wouldn't sell it as long as I have my car. They cost $2K back in 1980 and are impossible to find now. I have never heard of anyone with the ralley version and would guess you could ask any amount ($4K?) for it!!!!!!!

I just sold one of the "Rally" Option FS5C71-B ( 32010-N3201 )transmissions for £2,000 - so your guess of around $4K is fairly accurate at today's exchange rates. It went to another European country for a race car project.

I sold an Option 2 Race transmission ( 32010-N3221 ) to a friend in Japan last year, and it has been put into his Works 240ZR replica race car. I was happy that it went 'home' to a good home.

I still have an Option 1 Race transmission ( 32010-N3220 ) if anyone wants / needs one.

Hi Ray,

Yes, they were the two codes for the respective 5-speeds that came as standard equipment on first generation Z cars in most markets except the USA / North American market.

The FS5C71-A - sometimes known as the 'straight stick' box - was first, and was superseded by the FS5C71-B - sometimes known as the 'bent stick' box - around late 1971 / early 1972 ( Factory manuals state 'Jan.1972' as changeover date for Australian market cars ).

Thankyou Gentlemen, you have piqued my interest somewhat!!:classic:

Just to expand on the box; It was suggested to be worth around the $3000(aussie) dollar mark when the combination was assembled in 1989-90. At the time I put it down to "talk" and let it be. I have recently inherited the project, and managed to track the chap who built the engine and sourced the gearbox, so hopefully in the near future I will learn all about it!

My original idea was to remove the engine and gearbox for a more suitable vehicle (I was thinking BOLWELL Mk 7) as it currently resides in a restored1965 PRINCE Skyline GT, and is simply far too much for the braking and handling capabilities of the old Prince. I would much rather source an original G7 2litre for the Prince.

I now have other plans for the L series Nissan motor and box...as I don't have the car yet I won't say what, but I will say it is a Nissan vehicle that could handle it, and possibly already runs a very similar combination:D This is why I would like to confirm just what the gearbox is.

So...how are the boxes identified, and where are these codes you speak of??

Once again thanks guys, I know there is a lot of possiblies / maybes in all of this but it is certainly a direction I'm fiercely determined to head in.

Have you spoken with Warren Skimmings about it? Would be a pity to junk it, an advert in Ozdat is also an option.

Keep in mind though the later model Sylvia type boxes are stronger, are usually in much better condition than the oldies and have quite good ratios. I've heard of people putting the later model guts into the Z type casing too, which is probably what I'll end up doing with the RB20DET box.
