I just finished installing a replacment turn signal switch & lever. After replacing the plastic 2 piece steering column cover I noticed that the opening where the lever comes out seems seems a lot larger then needed. The lever I replaced had cruise control on it so it was similar to the wiper /lights lever and hid the opening completely. My long winded question is: was there a rubber piece similar to a shifter boot or grommet in this area?

Not that I am aware of.

Don't forget that the turn signal stalk also doubles as the High / Low beam switch.

It was the "north/south " area that I was thinking about rather than the front to back for the high/low beams. I guess the much larger stalk that had the cruise control on it just hid the gap. I wonder if the stalk with the cruise was OEM or added from another year car. Mine is a 73, was that an option then?

I would really doubt that cruise control was a factory option in 73. It's not even mentioned as an option in my 1978 sales brochure! Some P.O. probably hacked your steering column surround.

Cruise control was not an option on any 240Z model year. It was not available on early 260Z's either. No idea when it became available from Nissan.

Thanks for the info. The guy who added it on this car actually did a nice job. The stalk matched the headlight/wiper stalk almost exact. Even the wiring looks original. I assumed it was original. Only problem was the left turn signal didn't work when I purchased the car. After close examination I realized that he cut the original stalk down to 2 inches and slid the cruise control stalk over it. It seems like a lot of effort just for cruise control.

Certainly not in the modern sense. People here have mentioned the hand throttle on early cars, but that mounted on the center console next to the choke handle, not on the steering column.

True, but contrary to my original belief and if I remember correctly (from a thread of either Kats, Alan, or Carl Beck) the Hand Throttle was not meant as a cruise control but rather a method to keep idle RPM up while warming the engine. (i.e. used in conjunction with the choke).

Did a quick search for the thread, but either missed it or didn't find it. Doesn't matter much anyway

My 73 has only the choke, no hand throttle. Does that mean it really isn't a choke but the equivalent of keeping your foot on the gas pedal and maintaining a certain rpm?

The "hand throttle" was only available on very early cars and was actually removed for (apparently) safety reasons. They went so far as to insert stickers in later owner's manuals that covered up that feature. I'll have to let one of the local experts explain this fully but it has been discussed here before quite a few times.
