i have a 71 240 z that i am getting a 83 turbozx motor put in. i am waiting for an estimate on rebuilding the motor right now. do you think that it would be wise to to get a 3.1 stroker rebuild done on the motor. has anyone heard of a 3.1 turbo motor? would it handle the stress?

I can't directly answer your question. I have heard however, that it is VERY expensive to build a stroker motor correctly. Putting a turbo in there should be plenty of power increase. With inter-coolers and upgrade turbos, and engine management, you can get some serious HP from a turbo motor.

Hey Jason, all I can offer is that you need the crankshaft out of a diesel L28 motor. Commonly known as the LD28. They are hard to find and those who have them want good money for them. You need an L28 block, I dont think you can safely bore the L24 block that much. Then you need nine millimeter rod bolt 240Z rods and 240SX pistons and on and on and on. All this for a motor that will make less than 300 horses. Not that that's bad, she'll make torque up the wazooo!!!

If I were you, I'd go the turbo L28 route. Add an intercooler and aftermarket injector controller, better turbo, better exhaust, better air intake. You should make the same or more horsepower with this setup and it would be more reliable. The stroker motor requires a lot of machine work that could cause trouble later. Its been done many times so surely you can get more advice from someone who's done the 3.1.

Much luck

Chris

Member "Ben" has done the 3.1ltr stroker Turbo motor. It's possible but I couldn't tell you what type of connecting rods you'll need or pistons for that matter.

It will be expensive to build I'd say go with the turbo L28 how it is first. See how you like it and if you feel the need for 450-500HP then you will want the 3.1ltr.

Then again I'm the type who likes a clean all around car ie: paint interior, motor etc..

The turbo motor can make 450hp out of 2.8L

stroking it just seems unnessisary. Bore it out in the rebuild and call it good. You'd have a 3.0L Just be sure to use dished pistons. You don't want 9:1 compression, but you do want a short stroke. :devious:

The light weight flywheel might all be the 225mm contact surface where as the turbo has a larger 240mm surface. As for the throttle body, I think they say that because of the intake pipe being solid instead of the rubber tube on the NA...?

Anything can be adapted. I've seen turbo motors with the 240SX throttle body.

the 300zx vg30dett is pretty heavey, all VGs were heavy. there is no need to do a stroker motor unless you have the cash to go all out around it. there was a guy on hybrid z selling his turbo stroker motor, but it was fully built, and im not kidding, individual throttle bodys, custom plenum, fully build turbo race head built by rebello and much more but people have pulls 400+ hp out of the stock internaled L28 so go with that for a while and see how you like it
