New dashes??

I've seen the dash caps you can buy to cover up your cracked dashes.....

Is there a reason why I can't seem to find a brand new dash reproduction? I've seen one for sale for $900, but it sold, it was a Nissan OEM part, I'd rather go out and buy the whole thing though than just a cap.... if they can make a dash cap, why doesn't anyone sell a full dash?

Also, has anyone tried recovering a dash with either vinyl or leather? seems to me if you could get the material, it wouldn't be unreasonable to form it to fit the original dash... would take a little sewing and maybe.... may look nicer than a cap.

I saw the fiberglass and carbon fiber dashes when I did a search for 'replacement dashes'... they looked interesting but I was wonderring if they would then be rock hard to touch....

I was just surprised at how many companies offer replacement dash caps, but how hard it was to find a replacement dash...

$$ to be made here anyone?

Send it to Dashboard restorations they are good at what they do.

If you would like to see what they did check out www.240z.id.au

his was done by them and mine also check my gallery.

Why make the whole replacement part when all you need to do is fix the vinyl?

If your serious about your Z then it's gonna cost alot more to restore than the initial amount you spent on it. So I wouldn't be worried about the cost of parts.

Honestly.. I don't know. I've read many a thread where people had mixed opinions on the half and full dash covers. So I was iffy about those.

$$ isn't the problem... that comment about the dash costing more than my whole car was meant as a joke...

I believe that there are only 2 manufacturers of the Dash Caps, sold by many distributors. Quality does seem to vary, plus the patience and skill of the installer (who generally must trim it to fit) vary as well. The Half Caps generally look bad because "anyone" can see where they stop and the original dash begins. I have seen some "Full Caps" that were very acceptable (to me, for the $$) which were carefully installed.

Regarding Gavins comment about the vinyl, I think he was refering to the Dashboard Resto folks who peel the vinyl/foam padding from your dash and work their magic on it and reinstall on the original dashboard metal frame. When you buy, or build a new dash you are getting (or making) a complete new frame, and covering.

FWIW, the carbonfibre dash from PDK that I saw a couple years ago, was "hard" surfaced (i.e. not padded in anyway).

Has anyone used Just Dashes to restore a Z dash? I used them about 5 years ago for my GTO dash & console. They did a fantastic job. I think I paid $650 for the dash. My original was trashed. I was thinking of contacting them for my 73 Z. They are in Van Nuys,CA. Anyone with Z experience with them?
