Should I get a 240Z for my 1st car?

I'd say no all the way. Unless you got mad bling bling, it's a bad idea. I just broke the break lines on mine trying to do the springs/shocks, and can't get any break lines in until 5 days from after it happened!!! Stuff like that will kill you unless you have another car to drive. You aren't going to really have any junkyard access, so anything and everything is going to cost alot more too.

I bought mine when I was 18, and the car is trying to get me evicted by eating money left and right now.

Also get ready to throw away weekends at a time with a multimeter trying to diagnose an electrical problem if that old wiring does what it probably will do.

I got my 240Z as my 3rd car after a '87 325i and a '96 240SX.

I really wish I had gotten a 240Z as my first. HOWEVER, I know I would have been overwhelmed by how much you actually have to know in order to own one.

They say, all 240Z owners are required to be able to work on their own cars when a problem arises. There aren't too many mechanics that still know carbs. They rely too much on that plug & diagnose OBD system now. They can't do anything without a computer telling them what to fix.

I cannot strongly recommend getting anything less than a 240Z that comes with strong running mechanics.

You're getting yourself into a lot of time and money invested to just keep it on the road everyday. Trust me, until you're done working out all the bugs in your car YOU WILL SUFFER.

If you're young enough to not have a first car yet, it means you can still feed of your parents right? At least I was lucky enough to do that with a PITA '87 325i. Just be sure you have a source of money. You also don't necessarily NEED a car everyday since you're living fine car-less right? If you can hitch a ride from somebody else while your Z is experiencing its usual down time, a 240Z won't be bad.

At the end, you'll know MUCH more about the 240Z and cars in general when compared to your friends with newer cars that are overloaded with electronics.

I've almost owned my 240Z for about a year now and I still haven't worked out all the small bugs yet. But then again, I'm only a college student working off a parttime job with only enough money to buy one part at a time. It's a long and frustrating journey, but I've never had so much fun with ANY car before.

If you're looking for an IDEAL first car, a Z is NOT IT. If you're looking for an AWESOME first car, you've hit the nail on the head. It will break. It will rust. It will empty your wallet. But you will arrive in the school car park every day grinning like a mug.

im 21, o substainal income, but a 78 fairladys (260z) is my first car, and i drive it everyday in fairly heavies traffic everyday, love it,

sure they will break mine cost me $1000 to get it reliable for daily driving,

i have to fix the rust, headlights and heater (fogs up when it rains) for next warrent. but boy is it fun.

if you truely like driving for the sake of driving, not to show off or pick up chicks (thou its good for that to) than ya cant beat a z.

speeding tickets are another problem, you just feel you are going to slow most of the time.

My first was a '78 datsun skyline (Same running gear and motor as the Z). I learnt a of a lot about cars with that one and got it running really good as a daily driver throught the last year of high school. Depends what floats your boat. If you want to get from point A to point B in a slush box, thats cool. If you want learn a heap about cars, get a real buzz out of driving it, and grin like an idiot, get the z.

probs do occour, but makes it all the more worthwile. Have driven and owned a heap of cars, jags, hondas, alfa's, fords, toyotas, etc. Would take a z any day over any of em. any day!

I bought a 78 280z as my first car (beginning of the summer) but since I live in IL where they salt the heck out of the roads I bought another cheap car to drive around in the winter. It's a great car as people have said, for those who want to learn about tinkering with a cool car. That's why I bought mine. :-)
