AC Evaporator Leak

My '72 240Z with factory air has decided that I don't need the comforts of AC during the 5 months of summer here in Miami, FL.

I discovered a leak at the evaporator after running a black light over the system.

I have seen some products advertised that claim to stop leaks. Has anyone used these with any success? I don't mind trying as it has been difficult to find a replacement part. What are my alternatives in this case?

I hate to be the one to tell you but I'm sure someone else would have. Your factory A/C isn't factory. They were a dealer add on to boost the sales price.

I haven't heard about a product to stop A/C leaks. I have heard of a "seal conditioner". I guess it all depends on where your system is leaking if it would work. Personally I don't like to add things to any system as they might "gunk-up" something else. Also if you are running the older freon instead of the new 134r it would be a good time for the upgrade. The older freon costs up to $45 for 8oz (one can).

Depending on where your system is leaking you should be able to have it repaired. Look for someone that works on A/C systems and radiators. They will most likely be able to repair it.

Another option is you could move up here to New York. Summer hasn't quite gotten to us yet.:ermm:

Good luck.

Well, we ran the black light over the system this morning after charging and couldn't find any indication of a leak. The compressor shuts down prematurely when I adjust the temp. switch. This leads me to believe that it may be a faulty AC thermostat.

Anyone know where I can pick one up? Or is there a substitute available. I have been all over the www. and don't find anything.

It is hot here in Miami, but I was in Niagra Falls last May and that is definitely weather I would not miss.

Hi Eric, is your thermostat the rotary control type with a capillary tube extending down to the evaporator? If so you can go to your local Mack Truck Dealer and order number 4379-RD41720. This is a variable thermostat with a range of 34 to 52 degrees and has a 27 inch tube. It wont be exactly like yours but it should work. Current price is between $19.77 and $22.90 depending on if they give you a good deal or not. Although that's not much of a price difference.

Ed is right, no 240Z came with factory air and I have seen two different control pods in the cars.

Much luck,

Chris
