choke issues

Those rubber boots seem pretty pliable, but they very well *could* be acting as a "return spring", hence my problem of the choke handle not staying in place... judging from your reaction, they're not "original" ?

Are there supposed to be any springs attached to the choke mechanism? I think I just have to stop torturing myself and wait until my factory service manuals, etc. arrive from TN and my Z Therapy videos show up :)

Last night I routed the choke cables through the correct hole in the firewall, and got the grommet in place. I may not have the cable routed correctly inside the car, from the center console ... anyway, now that the cable sheaths don't really move, and they're coming from the right direction, the handle pretty much stays back when you pull it back. I started her cold last night and dropped her off at a shop about 10 mins away (to get steering rack bushings put in to pass NYS inspection), and had no problem driving her. Even my choke light works correctly now :)

Hey guys get the ZTherapy videos. The tune up one will tell you how to fix the console and why it breaks.Just S.U.'s gives you in depth tear down and tune up of the carbs.I waisted a lot of time trying to get the carbs right.I followed the video and installed the tune up kit.The mixture screws are sensitive to adjustment the car makes real good power. The diff hits hard in second I think I'm going to need another front diff mount soon! Ooops! 240 Al :D

Bad dog, Just an FYI.Myself when I use the choke handle.I put my finger under the "head" of the knob and pull back on the neck. That has the metal arm in it and is stronger. You can't buy those choke knobs anymore. Have fun!! Daniel

Actually, I've seen these choke knobs for sale at Motorsport Auto. Has anyone ordered them? Are they OEM? I think I still have the scar on my right hand from slipping off that damn choke handle so many times.

Yeah I ordered one from Motorsports once, for my 240Z (which has been sold to anothr 240Z.org member). It worked fine, although it did not have a lot lot of motion to it. I had Z therapy carbs (1970 model) attached but was advised my Motorsports to go ahead and get '73 choke cable to match the car. The cables worked fine but did not have a great range of motion.

Once upon a time I ordered from msa and nissan they were 510 choke knobs. The 240 as we know has "lobes" on each side of the choke design on the knob. The 510 has a lobe on the left, the right side is straight. It will work and few would notice. It was some time around 1985 that I was looking.Availability may have changed. Some years later in december I went into a shop that repaired Z's only.In the corner was a junkpile of parts, trannys, rearends, clutches, etc. They were piled in an"A" or christmas tree pattern. At the top, just like the star, there was the choke knob!!!You can have it if you can get it theowner said.It was still attached to the cables that were buried. That was one of the best xmas presents ever!!LOL Daniel

I am glad to hear that worked out for you. That happened with my '81 280ZX. I went to the dealership for an emergency brake cable and someone had just returned one. They needed a brake for a '91 300ZX but the guys wife had ordered an '81. He returned the unused cable and bought the correct one. Now certain what to do with (by Nissan standards) a 'used' emergency brak cable, he sold it to me for $5 bucks! Of course I have ince lost that car, but the story still makes me feel all fuzzy inside.
