Need to replace clutch

...and on a related note, a guy at one of my rental properties left me title to his 1980zx 2+2 said it wouldnt work. I put a battery in it and started it up after a bit of fiddling with the ground wires.

He said it needed a clutch, I pressed the clutch in and it just stayed there (at the floor after I attempted to let it out), I was able to engage it in reverse but after that no luck.

I wonder if it is a worn out clutch, or something else clutch related.

...any clutch experts out there?

That last bit with the 280ZX sounds like a hydraulic issue. The clutch hydraulics consist of the master cylinder, the slave cylinder, and the hard and soft lines that connect them. Usually the master and slave are both replaced together. The hard clutch line is almost never an issue, and the soft line down by the slave can be inspected for cracks and leaks and replaced if need be.

Your 240 clutch kit should have come with an alignment tool also, so you probably don't need to worry about going out and getting one.

There may be one of several issues here

one I have seen/read about is the clutch disk rusting to the flywheel/and/or pressure plate.

The other is the hydrolics going bad/dry/air in lines.

So, flush the master cylinder and slave cylinder\ with new fluid. Get a friend to push the clutch pedal while you open and close the bleeder valves.

Observe the slave cylinder moving the clutch release lever on the side of the bell housing. If it does, then the issue would seem to be in the clutch itself.

Maybe the return springs on the clutch pedal, or the slave cylinder are missing or broken. crawl under the dash and car to observe
