B pillar "240Z" badge removal

Is it a plastic or metal badge.

Metal ones are far more resistant to breaking than plastic as you would expect. I puposely went out of my way to get secondhand metal ones to avoid problems with them breaking.

Can you get behind the badge inside the car and push the pins out?

what you need is the proper tool for the job.it basicly looks like a flat screw driver (sometimes called a panel pin remover)with a large head with a v cut into it and bent up at the end for leverage so that when you slide it in behind the badge the v goes where the pin is and supports the badge either side of the pin holding it in place and then you lever it back and hopefully the badge wil come away in one piece.you might be able to slide a piece of paper behind the badge first to try and work out where the pins are.

Can't get the picture link to open from 240znz's post. My questions is on my 72 240Z and the 77 280Z the pillar seems to have what looks like a hole behind the badge emblem. Is this functional and/or the replacement for the vents on the hatch of the 70 240Z? I've seen a few rare autos that have a vent in a simular area but it actually is to force air to the rear brakes to keep the heat down. On the Z, is it for air circulation in the cabin? These are things that I think of when I'm polishing the cars, so I thought I'd ask :)

Yes, the hole behind the pillar emblems was the replacement for the vent hatches on the early models. I suppose Datsun found out early on about the negative pressure behind the car attempting to draw exhaust back in.

Thanks for the answer Mike. We seem to get the famous Z exhaust smell when we roll down the windows. What would cause that when the windows down? The vapor tank in the back? You'd think that with the windows up you'd get gased out but it's only with the windows down. Could there be some kind of reaction or air pressure difference between a possible leak in the vapor tank and the air comming inside from the rolled down window? This is in the 77 as the 72 doesn't have that "buldge" on the right rear inner panel. Matter of fact the 72 never has any type of exhaust smell in the cabin :love:

Yes the hatch vents that are found on the series 1 are great at letting in exhaust fumes. Air rushing past an open window creates a vacuum. The vacuum sucks outside air though the hatch vents and into the holes that are on the bottom edge of the hatch. Lovely smell...not. This of course is added by old perished hatch seals too.

The smell of petrol is more a result of perished tank hoses. Good idea to change them.

So to get rid of the smell you need to replace seals and hoses. Or never fill the tank to the top.

As for getting the badge off, I've pulled the internal plastic bits off and have gained access to the rear of the badge. I can see the pins poking through into the cavity and soon they will be pushed on to move the badge off.

Thanks for the tip to use a V lever, I'll give that a go if the push doesn't work. While the car will get all new paint, I still don't want to damage it, the metal is thin enough as it is....yikes. :ermm:

pushing the pins out has never failed to work for me, the only thing that might go wrong is if you don't push straight on the head of the pin, or that the badge has been stuck to the car as well as being held on the with the pins. Good luck, and if you break one I might have a spare badge for you. :)
