240z...no interior

G'day all,

I'm looking at purchasing a 1971 240Z, the problem is it has no interior... all carpets, panels and roofing are not there..

It does have a restored dash though, the seats are original but torn.

I live in Perth, WA.. and was wondering if you guys would recommend anywhere to buy basically a whole interior or any other advise for the situation i'm in.

Just trying to see what sort of price I would be looking at.

Also if anyone has gone with a white interior, considering i'll be buying a whole new one... and if the black dash can be converted

Thanks for any advice,

Sean

The interior parts are very very dear, even secondhand ones in australia seem to fetch crazy money. To do it up all original looking you would be abour 2k australian for all the bits and pieces via the US (Carpet kit 299.63aus, roof lining 76.24 aus, Diamond vinyl 332 aus then you have the mammoth cost of those interior molded panels and seat covers) I have even seen a person buy a complete but rusty 240 just for the interior parts alone. That said, a few weekends and a few tins of resin and fibreglass, coat it all with vinyl and it could look more than presentable. If the price is right go for it. The good news is even if the rest of the interior was white, the dash was still black, so at least that is all good.

You could try the (few) secondhand places around to get an idea.. Zworx & Z Car Workshop in Melb or Zparts in Sydney. The easiest colour to get a match would definately be black though as the largest % of cars had this colour interior. Secondly, it's the easiest colour to paint over panels if you can't get a full set of the one colour.

I have a red interior (which was a factory colour) and I've never even seen another car here in Australia with it. Consequently getting replcements are darn near impossible. On the other hand, I have a mate with a black interior and it's a lot easier.

There are places in the US that sell these bits new, but prepare your wallet for an aboslute hammering....and I think they're all black anyway.

Gee, do you happen to have the details for either store? Numbers etc? or do they have websites, thanks !

I think I might end up going with a parts car or something.. take some off a 240 being separated.

with the rear strut caps Gee, do the 280zx strut caps fit? as their are a LOT of red zx's.. just a thought.

Thanks, but ZX Strut caps are different and all 240/260 caps were black anyway.

All those stores can be found on this website in the contacts section. Failing that all 3 have websites so a quick look on google should turn them up. I believe there was also a thread approx 12 months ago that resulted in a comprehensive listing of z suppliers in Australia. Use the search function on this site to find it.

Getting a whole car worth of interior parts could be difficult and (maybe) costly. Carpet is no big deal though.

A hint? You are obviously going down the "resto" path and although you seem to be costing the whole idea, I'd be spending more time looking at the bodywork. This is the most expensive part of the z cars as they RUST. A cheaper option will nearly always be to buy a good/great car than a resto. Unless you buy a complete lemon you will save $$'s in the long run. Plenty on this site will attest to that.

ahh k...

Thanks for the info.. will start searching

Yeah. that's the thing, the body looks to have very little rust if any, a small bubble on the passenger door

Car had all the rust cut out and welded new in, new floorpans etc.

trust me.. Rust is my priority, hard to find a rust free Z for cheap though.

The car has no interior, gearbox or engine.. the car has no rust to my knowledge.. will find out soon w/ a panelbeater

The reason I'm looking at this is I plan on doing an RB20DET R32 swap into it

:devious:

so kinda perfect except for the interior situation

Doing an RB swap into an early zed...hmm.. you won't be that popular here!ROFL Have a look at Fast Fours this month to see a nice example.

Anyway, good luck on the swap.. If you are serious about the whole thing have a surf over to hybridz.org, they should be able to help you out... there are a few people who've done it here too.

Haha.. yeahh I saw the article.. not a fan of the dash or chromes but yeah, a nice car none the less.

Have talked to a few people over there but mostly all are doing the RB25 or 26 as it's U.S. based due to the cost of getting an engine over there.

Hey cammo,

yeah.. saw it in the paper the other day... I'm pretty keen on doing the RB swap and $5000 for a car that I wouldn't be keeping either engine or gearbox is too much.

The car I'm looking at is one of Ian's so I'm hoping he might be able to help me out with the interior aswell.. will have to talk to him about it,

Do you know anything about the 240 for $5k?

No. Just saw it on the website, and though that cant be worth $5000 if it had to be in the quokka 2 weeks. 240Z usually sell on the first week. Maybe no one has looked at it?

Did you contact Frank about the cars he bought off Stewart? I hear he is selling them, except the race car 260.

  • 3 weeks later...

i contacted frank the day he bought the cars and showed my interest in the 240 shell...

contacted him several times saying I wanted to buy it and he said he was interested in selling, then tells me people are looking at it on the weekend (2 weeks ago) and that he would email me a couple of days later... hasn't done so
