Help with cleaning out the Fuel system!

Black Jaguar

Recommended Posts

Hi guys! Im having trouble with my Z at the moment. A couple of problems at once but managable and one problem Im not quite sure how to fix other then some extensive cleaning of the fuel system or ignition system.

The Problem: :pirate:

Starts up fine like it always has but recently it sputters like its running on 3 cylinders and is blowing black smoke from the excess gas not being ignighted like it should be. The car lacks power BIG TIME and is not safely drivable at the time. The other problems Im fixing with it are the old heater hose from the fire wall to the back engine S shaped hose went out and started leaking anti freeze while I was driving and made the car over heat. Then the car had a dead battery from the alternator charging at below 12 volts.

The Car: :rambo:

280z 1975 Fuel Injected, recently put a new distributor and had timing fixed, ran great till now. I've been keeping all of the matenence up to date.

Fixing: :surprised

I ordered a new heater hose through zcarparts.com and should be coming in the next week or so which is a while... and tightened the alternator belt and that fixed the dead battery problem. (I switched to a 1wire 105 amp alternator eariler) This sputtering problem is unconsistent and strange, I bought a spark plug problem analysizer that you put inline with the spark plug to determine good connections and will do that tomorrow. If that is not the case it must be the 30 year old fuel injectors and fuel system? (I just replaced the fuel filter) The new fuel injectors are 50 bucks a pop at the cheapest place I could find.

:bandit: IS there a way to clean the injectors and the fuel system if that seems to be the problem? I would love to know if anyone has taken their fuel injectors apart and what you need to clean and reinstall them!

Thanks for your expertise guys!

Loyal Z car fanatic, Dean

I just ran across a place called "Fuel Injectors Direct" on the internet. url as follows: www.fuelinjectorsdirect.com (Jacksonville florida I think) You might want to send your injectors down to these guys and have them rework them for you. They also sell "refurbished" injectors in the mid $40.00 range from what I could see from checking out their web site. Checking into sending some down myself so I'll have a couple of spare injectors.

another place to check out for injectors is http://www.zspecialties.com/

if you call and tell them you saw the ad on www.zcar.com they are only $34.95 or so each. i got mine there and they work great. i would also recomend getting a fuel rail at the same time off e-bay or something because messing with the stock fuel rail was the biggest pain :stupid:

I had the same problem with my little S-hose for the heater! Mine even hads a flush tee from the PO. I had the radiator shop fix that straight away.

Just about everything made of rubber or plastic that's exposed to t he elements is dried/cracked/etc. :(

The fuel injectors are paired with a resistor banks, 1-4 go to one pack of

resistors, and 5 & 6 operate off the other one. These are silver units located

behind the windshield washer bottle. Check harness for loose connection there.

Running on only some of the injectors surely will be rough.

Our club "tech guy" recommends sending injectors to www:witchhunter.com

and address to Gordon .
