Took my Z drifting the other day...again

Tom, I Pm'ed a buddy in Auzzy , and if he connects with you..it's up to him. He's in that country, and he knows of a few venues to set you up with.

Anyways...I'm almost ready...Just got to install the new clutch, and do a little more work, and the car will be good to go. I got the brakes all done yesterday, so new everything all the way around, flushed the sytems, and got to some more bushings....and yup....with no lube...they squeeeeeeeeek like hell.

Airjockie PM'd me on the other forum we're on and told me to give you a hand. Beeing a perth kid i would assume you know where collie is right? Well at collie they are having more and more drift days and general practice days that permit drifting. Some people i know are working to get wanneroo accessible for drift and allegedly the new MC track near the airport will be running drift sooner or later.

Open diff + sideways = BAD

Get yourself an LSD, or if you can't afford that get spare diff/centre and weld it. Will get the rear end out much more easily, but more importantly, it will be much more predictable.

yup, have an lsd. its a nissan patrol 4.375:1 lsd.

The whole diff or just the center? I've never heard of anyone using a patrol diff. Any info on fitting one to a zed?

i went and asked dad and he thinks it isnt a patrol diff, but i certainly remember the previouse owner said it was some kind of 4x4 diff because it has the 4.4 (actually 4.375) ratio rather than a 4.1.

Just got back from the event...I hope a lot of people took pic's...I'll post them when they start surfaceing on the net....

Anyways...I had the car nearly set up perfect.....except the LSD and the tires...

It handled great, kicked out when I wanted it to , but it just wouldn't stay out or it stayed to far out...and I was in a spin....

But I don't feel bad...I still had a great time, and met a lot of cool people.

Two real drifters took my Z out for a run or two...and they did just the same as I did.....spin city. They just pointed out that it was also perfect, plenty of torque, good speed, nice and solid car...but the tire choice was to poor for the car...with the open diff, a decent drift is possible....just not with new Azenis's 195/60/14 on the front, and new Dunlop G/T Qualifiers 225/60/14 on the back...the prodrifters said the best way for this car to drift is to have...I dropped my jaw to the ground when they said this....is to have sticky tires all the way around....with a low profile, as in a 17 inch rim with 40's on it.

ahhwell...I still got to play with the car, and let other people play with it....it was a lot of work, and all the work payed off haveing all the people at the event give me props for the car....

I guess whats next for the car...can go two ways.....clean up the rust areas I found and do the body work, and spend some real money and get the car properly painted and have it be the garage queen/week-end cruiser.......or get a LSD, plan out a turbo, and get more tires and rims, and get it ready for next year and get as much pratice and get good with it....

I'd definitely be putting a mechanical LSD on the wish list. Or maybe just get yourself a second open diff and weld it. Swap the locker in for the drift days. It'll make a HUGE HUGE difference to the predictability of the car when it's sideways.

Mind you though....it certainly can be done with an open diff. One of my mates that loves his drift used to drive a VL commodore. Plenty enough power to turn the treads, but they handle like utter $^!#....and an open diff. He still succeeded at drifting this thing.....but damn was it a hairy experience! The amount of steering correction needed to keep it where he wanted it was just crazy.

He now has a twin turbo manual soarer...with an aftermarket LSD.....this thing's just a natural. Soooooo predictable when sideways it's not funny! Let me tell you he puts on quite a show in the thing!

So yeah....if you can get the hang of it with an open diff.....you'll be a good bit ahead when you go get a LSD or locker in there.
