What's this bung for?

I did a lot of work on my car and another in that area, and I too could find no reason for it. However, due to the construction of the car in that area, I believe it may have been used as a jig holder for all the sheet metal below. If I recall there are 3-4 sheets of metal that join in that area.

Just a thought.

I didn't check the plug size in mine, but I think they are pretty close to the same size as the four in the bottom of the rocker panels.

I'd say it's likely they may have been put there while the chassis was on the assembly line to hold the chassis in the correct alignment before final welding as Enrique alluded to.

Cheers guys,

Another Zed mystery put to bed!

Thanks MikeW. The left hand bung split when I removed it so I was needed a new one, cheers for the link.

Fired the old girl up last night, hadn't been running for 4 months. Plugs out, turned over to get that oil and fuel running, plugs back in and 20 seconds of coughing then varoom....splutter cough fart....varooooooooom. Ticked over for 10 minutes then off. That head leak has come back from #6, albeit a trickle then drip then stops. Looking more like a gasket problem, as when cold a leak, then warms up head expands and closes issue. I'm going to have to pull the head dig around. Time to port match anyway.

Slowly stripping from the hatch forward...finding minor surface rust but the hatch threshold is eaten out....aaarrrggghhhhhh...the joys of owning a early Zed.

Geezzzzzz

If you remove the hatch from the vehicle to do work in and around the hatch jamb area, be careful when you remove the hinges from the body. That is if you don't just remove the hatch from the hinges.

The hinges have a rubber "sock" that fits around them and into the cavity in the roof. Those rubber "socks" are NLA from just about anyone. In fact, if anyone can help out, there are at least 2 of us here who could use a good pair.

Now, the main reason for pointing this out is that that pocket into which the hinge swings in and out of, CAN be a problem if it doesn't have the rubber boot. That section of the sheet metal dumps right into the dome light area and the two rear fender wells.
