Ya-know the bummer about this discussion? I bought a box of key parts on eBay, fixed up all the locks and keys for 26, and sold all the rest of the stuff to Chloe! Check out Kats' site for info about different keys and applications.

In looking again at the sticker in the glovebox, this is what's on it.

Key No. M-XXXX

VH-

FH-

Eng / Door-

Only the Key No. has a code after it the others have nothing. Does anyone know what the "VH" and "FH" stand for?

I've been doing a search for the correct way to enter my key codes on a new glove box decal and have come up empty.

My car is a late series 1 with two keys: the ignition key has a letter-four number, M-XXXX, code and the doors, glove box, & hatch key has a four number, XXXX, code.

The decal has the following:

KEY NO.

VH--

FH--

Eng'/DOOR--

If anyone has an original series one key code decal on their glove box door

with the two key codes, it would be a big help if you could describe where your codes are written on the decal. As Zrush has mentioned, I am not sure of the VH, FH, etc meanings, and she has just a single key for her car.

I tried to get a pic of mine but it didn't come out clear enough to see the numbers, but this is what it looks like. There is only one 4 digit number that is hand written. It takes up all the space on both lines that start with VH- & FH- because it is written twice as tall. There is nothing on the KEY NO. line and nothing on the ENG/DOOR- line. I can safely tell you the number (1222) as I have changed it out. I can try to get a better pic if you still need it in the daylight with a different camera tomorrow.

Thanks, Ron. That is a big help in defining use of the sticker space. Did your

car, being an early series 1, I believe, have a single key for all locks and ignition, or two keys as mine did? Any idea what VH & FH stand for?

ENG/Door may allude to a single key code for ignition and door? Or, maybe not???? No clues in my owner"s manual, either. A pic would be great if not too much trouble, Ron.

Hey Dan--

Arne is correct---he steamed the label and sent it to me. It is from his yellow 10/70 build date 71 part-out car. I also purchased his ignition lockset and key. The key is single sided, says "NISSAN" on one side and has the code "VH3913" on the other side with a faint embossing of "KS" below the code number. The "KS" most likely stands for KANTO SEIKI which is cast into the ignition lockset body along with the characters KV-3 and was the manufacturer/supplier. So it's a pretty safe bet that this is all original and goes together. Unfortunately the door key 7862 isn't accounted for.

The decal has the following:

KEY NO.

VH--3913

FH--

Eng'/DOOR-- 7862

From my 7/70 build date 71 project:

FH--

Eng'/DOOR-- 6707

I have the well worn original Nissan single sided Door key that matches this label. Unfortunately the Ignition Key 3737 is unaccounted for. :tapemouth

Both of the labels for the glove box have the numbers handwritten with poor penmanship. Hard for me to make out without a magnifier! LOL

Attached are poor pictures of these early keys.

Arne's Ignition Key is on the left, my Door Key is on the right in the pictures.

Sorry guys. This is very difficult to get a picture of, for me anyway. This is the best I can come up with, but should give you a better idea of what it looks like. There is only the one 4 digit number. I would be interested to know why it is different than Arne's which is also from a 10/70 and Jim's which is a 7/70 build. Mine falls in between those. Maybe a different MO from shift to shift?

hole and Nissan Motors imprinted in black). My door key is single sided (kind of square head with Z across key chain hole and Nissan Motors imprinted in black). I don't know if these are either VOSS or WASO keys.

VOSS and WASO keys are the early single sided ignition keys. WASO keys were not used for US Z cars. It sounds like you have a two sided ignition key, so yours is not the earlier one sided VOSS type. It is interesting that you have separate keys for the ignition and doors/etc. I thought that when the two sided keys came out in series II cars they operated both the ignition and everything else. I have a 3/71 parts car and it has a two sided key that works all the locks.

Mike, the 3/71 parts car with the two sided key that works all the locks interests me. Is this code recorded on a glovebox decal? Is the 4 digit code preceeded by the letter M? Here is why I am asking. My 10/70 also has two, two sided keys like Dan's. We need more input from other Series 1 owners but here is my theory so far. We know the jumbled nature of cars coming off the assembly line early on. I believe the identification numbers were stamped on the cowl stampings before frame up but this is in no way any indication of the order of the cars moving through the system or of order of completion. This would explain why my car which numerically falls in between Arne & Jim's cars is not keyed the same but is keyed like Dan's. It seems logical to me that Dan's key code decal should mimic mine, but again it would be nice to get more Series 1 input. Could the letter M preceeding the later key codes represent "master" meaning one key works everything? Interesting subject.
