Very, very strange.....

There must be some logic behind this, I just can't think of any good reason for having 2 different methods of locking. Wonder what the news across the pond might be?

With all the Z's throughout our group, some of us are sure to have identically keyed vehicles.

How about we create a list of those codes for which we collectively have keys... no need to list your name with the code.

If someone comes along and requires a key (like me)... I can look up my code, see if it is listed, and post a request for that _owner_ to send me a key duplicate.

Thoughts?

I used keysforclassics.com in Oz for some replacement keys. They made me up some door keys for my 1970 car from the 4 digit code stamped on the lock.

They have all the different types of keys for 1960's & 70's nissan's available for order on their website.

They also provided me with the code for my (very worn) ignition key from a hi-res photo of the key that I sent them.

Not that this matters but my old 79 310's keys would work in every lock on my 77 200SX. They were the typical Nissan USA key, cut on both sides. Looked just like Z keys except for the earliest American Z's which somebody mentioned were cut on only one side.

Remember Zedrally, the 72 is a Factory Restored Z, so maybe Nissan was getting lazy with the keys. My husband had the 77 ignition, doors and hatch all keyed for the same key.

Stock '71 and '73 240Z's for North America came from the factory with all locks keyed the same. Only the earliest Z's came with two different keys (cut on one side)

In looking again at the sticker in the glovebox, this is what's on it.

Only the Key No. has a code after it the others have nothing. Does anyone know what the "VH" and "FH" stand for?

Those ar the original codes for the one sided keys on the early (Series 1) 240Z's. They were for the ignition only.

Locksmith tried putting a M in front...no good. Then he tried putting a N in front...no good also.

Pulled RHS lock apart and made a new key. Works in both doors, not hatch, not glove box nor fuel flap.

Hatch lock doesn't have a code stamped on it. My old key never locked it so I'm sure that it is not an original.

I'm now going to turn the house inside out AGAIN!!! and find my old set...aaarrrgfgghhh )(^%$@$#!(@, (*&*^ing locks!!!!!

The joys of the Zed, hmmmmmm. I'm still smiling though....until I write my next post that is.

New key broke off the first lobe. Not enough meat on the key....must be wrong type....Locksmith to get the hurry up tomorrow.

My glovebox door has nothing about the key code written inside of it

Just a sticker telling me permissible load and passenger limitation

My key is getting worn to the point where I have to monkey around with it each time to get the tumblers to unlock any of the locks.

Your key code can be ascertained from a hi-res photo of the key by someone who knows how. That is what I did for my worn ignition key, but it works for door keys too.
