Hey Ty,

If the motor mounts look bad to you, change them. Wouldnt hurt if you can work them into your budget.

And congrats on your upcoming wedding, I wish you all the best!!

Hey Carl, you have a Fel-Pro(Blow) failure? Tell me about it please. Should I be leery? I have run them since 83. Never had a problem. I dont use their head gaskets if that what you're implying. I usually use Nissan head gaskets.

While the engine bay is empty, take the opportunity to climb in there and CLEAN it thoroughly.

For mine I plan on doing POR-15 on the engine bay while the engine is out. This will eliminate any future rust issues in there...especially the battery tray which already has some surface rust.

I'm a little confused about the mechanical vs electrical fuel pump issue. Where does the electric fuel pump ChrisA mentions mount? Does it mount in the same spot as the mechanical pump on teh L24? I assume the L28 i have includes a fuel pressure regulator, where does it go in the L28 w/carb setup? of course, I'm at work when i think of these questions, so i can't look at the engine until tonight. thanks for any clarification on this issue.

Electric fuel pump on 240Z's (73 only) mounted at the rear of the car, near the gas tank. Passenger side, just in front of the tank.

I don't know about a presure reg. on a L28, but if there is one, I doubt it would be "on the engine".

For a carb set-up you don't want more than about 3 to 5 psi fuel pressure,

Swap make in heaven( or at least japan).Use the 240 intake/exhaust gasket. The intake portion does NOT have the teardrop cut out for the FI injector. Make sure the exhaust on the 280 is square not round to use 240 exhaust manifold. Also the 280 will NOT have a cam on the end of the cam shaft to make the mech. fuel pump work. Move it over from the 240.Its easy.

Bambikiller,

Can i use an electric fuel pump from a 280? There are plenty of those around, but not so many '73 240's.

Daniel,

Unfortunately i have the N47 head which has round exhaust ports. The MSA sales rep said that i could use the N47 exhaust manifold with the carb setup. is this true?

my plan was to use all the 240 intake/exhaust and fuel/carb system. however, it doesnt seem like it will work out. Will the square port exhaust manifold with the round port head work? any thoughts?

i apologize if these are stupid questions.

thanks,

Ty

I don't think that you can use a 280Z fuel pump. reason? They operate at a vastly higher pressure (due to the fuel injection). If you cannot find a 240Z electric fuel pump, I'd get an aftermarket electric fuel pump that is designed for use on carbureted engines. You'll need to find a way to mount it, but it shouldn't be too difficult to fabricate a bracket (you may even be able to buy one). Check Summit or Jeg's on line.

Hey Ty, I might not be correct in this but here goes.

If you put carbs on the L28 and it DOESNT have the hole for the mechanical fuel pump, then you'll have to use an aftermarket regulator with an aftermarket pump UNLESS the electric pump has very low pressure like around 4-5 psi. The regulator for the injectors on the L28 is mounted in the end of the fuel rail I thought. It will not work with carbs. Fuel injection uses very high fuel pressure which would flood your carbs if you could use the L28 regulator which you cant. If your head has the hole in it for the mechanical pump and has the eccentric on the camshaft then just mount a stock mechanical pump in that location. You'll have to re-route the fuel lines to feed the pump and up to the fuel rails you'll use from the L24.

My electric pump is mounted back by the fuel tank. It is a pusher type pump versus puller. I have seen aftermarket electric pumps mounted under the hood but they would need to be puller type pumps.

Hope this make sense. Ask more questions if it doesnt.
