Bugger - R180 LSD I bought is actually a R160 - is it still useful

Howdy,

Bought an R180 LSD off the New Zealand equivalent of eBay and when it arrived it looked a bit small. Have since worked out it is a R160. It came with a 3.7 and 3.9 ratio and a Nismo LSD centre.

It is in good order but I am not sure if it is much chop for my 240z which has an open 3.9 in it.

I was wondering if the LSD centre can still be used in my spare R180 casing or whether I should start again.....

Does the R160 bolt in? This is for a street car running mild hp so I am unlikely to break it. I know it is not as strong as a R180 or R200

Bugger!!!

Cheers

Glenn

Interesting question Glenn,

I too was wondering if the internals to lets say a 3.54 R-180 would fit inside a 4.11 R-180 case or vice-versa?

This way you could save on shipping costs by just having the gears sent to you instead of the entire diff assembly.

Cheers - he still reckons it is a R180 so I am going to take it a Z club guy to identify properly - the ring gear is 16cm across and the rear cover is the same as a R160....

Will see what happens

Here's a heads up on another R160 LSD!

I too had the same question and already posted in the HELP! forum. Sorry if I'm saturating, but I was really curious, and I need an affordable LSD bad so I can start drifting!

Please let me know if you learn that the R160 is applicable or not, Nustad!

Yes it can be used - the one I have has the same output flanges as the 240z but the smaller diff and ring gear generates more heat and if you are drifting then it will be toast - go for the R200 for drifting

I also have a Skyline R32 GTS25 and if you are going to put in an RB engine you may as well put in the Viscous LSD R200 from the R33GTS25T or the GTR diff if you go the big $ route.

Have fun

Personally I am keen to do a RB30/RB25DE NA hybrid with throttle body injection.....one day

Well now I'm really tossed up in this. I love the inline six and I too am inclined to an NA motor. Nothing is more attractive to me than the F20C from the Honda S2000, but the RB 2L six in NA form would be my RB pick, and it would help me maintain manufacturer integrity.

At least I've narrowed my choices, but stalking around hybridz.org last night only spun me around even more. Thanks for the diff advisement; I was looking for it.

With lots to contemplate and many dreams to fulfill.
