Progressive doesn't insure cars made before 1981, and Geico requires a 17-digit VIN (same thing).

So I'm staying with my current auto insurance provider.

Being a Geico member since 1989, and having NO bad experiences with them, I'm

shocked !!!

Even a year or so ago, when I first purchased my Z, they were very helpful and

advised me to go to a collector car insurance co for a better rate! But I did not

have the car yet, so insured it on my Geico policy, thus giving me the 3 car

discount.

Now, once I had the Z, went to Hagerty for it, and advised Geico that I only

want the 2 existing vehicles on the policy....no problem, they dropped the Z

and the 2 remaining ones stayed on, at the 3 car rate. They said OK !!!

I'll stick with Geico forever....I even have comprehensive coverage at NO

Deductable...2 vehicles at less that 700/yr.

Having worked for Progressive for many years that's crap. They will insure anything and anyone (for a price), and that's the honest truth. What is likely happening is that the computer systems can only accurately decipher a 17 digit VIN which started in '80 or '81 and this is why you are unable to get a quote online with either company. Do it the old fashon way, pick up the phone. I know that when I worked there I had VIN books that went back to the '50s and would have to dust them off when someone wanted a car of that vintage insured because the computer could not determine what the car was since the VIN was less than 17 digits...and we had TONS of people still driving '70s models. FYI: I worked there from '92-98.

So why don't they decipher the VIN enough to tell you to call them on the phone? There must be a way to decode VINs to the point where you can tell about how old the vehicle is.
