Hey Z people,

Has anyone ever heard of someone converting a new nissan 6 speed trans mission so that it would fit on a Z. Is it even posible? Is it just a matter of changing the input shaft and the bell housing? I don't really know anything about how tranny's work, but I was just courious.

I know alot of the newer cars have the 6 speed. But what would be the advantage of it in a Z? I always thought a 4 speed was best, no? Even a 5 speed, isn't the fifth gear just overdrive for highway cruising. I'd think a 3 speed with the proper rear gears would get you there quicker. Don't most top fuel or funny cars just use a 3-speed? Interesting topic zeiss150.

Hey vicky, thanks for the post. My idea for a 6 speed is that with the curent 280z 5 speed when you put a "faster" rear end on your cursing RPMs go up about 500, so with a 6 speed you could maybe run a 4.11 rear end and keep the low RPMs of the "slower" rear end. Not to mention how fast you could got with a 6 speed. lets see 90mph at 4000 in 5th gear so maybe 3000 in 6th? By the way I really dont know $hit about trans ratios and stuff like that so maybe it would be a waste of money and energy to put in a 6 speed. Any one eles have some ideas or comments?

Matt-

P.S. think how cool it would be to have a close ratio short through shifting.

theres a few guys over at hybridz who bought the 350z tranny and are going to fit it to their z's. the adfvantage of a 6 speed would be on a road course, you would be able to keep the revs up high and keep your turbo boosting(of you were running a turbo). Also, wince the gear would be more closely spaced, it would be easier to adjust your shifting to stay in the vehicals powerband since you would have more options. Not nesscerily the best choice for drag racing. And most dragsters(top fuel) use pnuematically shifted 2 speed transmissions or hydromatic transmissions.

i saw an article in a magazine here in wa where a guy put a skyline gtr box in his 260z. i dont know if they are 5 or 6 speed but apparantly they fit better in the zed than the skyline. just take out the parts for the front diff and your almost there.

Most of the time the difference between the 5spd and the 6spd is the gap between gears. 1st is usually the same between the trannies, and 5th and 6th are usually the same. But, in the six speed the ratios are closer spaced to keep the revs up in the peak HP/TQ range. Works well with variable valve timing on the newer motors that only make power over 5000rpms. The 6spd will lose less revs per shift than the 5spd. I think the Z's do just fine with the 4spd/5spd. Their motors make good use of the power band.
