Posted August 9, 200420 yr comment_90443 Hi guys, I currently own a rust free 1971 240z Build No.#692? (RHD) which I bought a week ago with no gearbox or engine in sight. I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts were in putting an RB20DET (nissan inline 6) back into the 240z... I sort of feel bad doing it to such an early build car but considering the engine bay was empty when I bought it, i don't feel so bad.. Thanks for any thoughts, Sean p.s. pics of the rb are in my gallery, will have the 240 loaded up once i get photos of it Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/12810-rb20det-240z/ Share on other sites
August 9, 200420 yr comment_90450 i was gona do that, but i fell in love with my L20, has not let me down yet, plus ill lose the lovely exhaust note once it becomes a turbo car. but if theres no engine then you might as well make it go as fast as a zed looks already. August 9, 200420 yr comment_90453 Ita a shame the car didn't have its original engine.. (but I'll get off my soapbox now!)If you are starting from scratch engine-wise you migh as well put in what ever you like...even better if you "keep it in the family" and use a high-end Nissan 6cyl. Talk to Cuong about RB transplants, he's in the wazregister as well.So did you get a good deal from Ian? August 10, 200420 yr Author comment_90454 Yeahh I'm putting an RB20DET into it, maybe the one in my gallery, it's in japan... Bought the car with no gearbox, engine, carpets, door faces, centre console. It's got a restored dash, and a front spoiler. NO RUST that was my main priority. August 12, 200420 yr comment_90951 How much would it cost you? Is there direct bolt-on engine mount kits for this swap??? And which transmission will you be using? August 13, 200420 yr Author comment_90959 No, no engine mount kits, you can use the mounts off a 200ZR (Z31 with RB20) but i'll just be shortening the RB mounts.. as the engine is too high (hits hood)I will be using the RB20DET front cut, the gearbox fits straight into the 240's driveshaft w/ out modification. the sump needs to be reversed and modified, and the crossmember adapted, two holes instead of on.Front cut here in Perth AUS$2100 (engine, g/box, engine loom etc) sump $200 (person I bought the car off is a prof. welder )mounts $200 maxEngine wired for $300have to buy intercooler, piping, boost guageOverall i'd say around $4000 for the swap. but then you're going to need better brakes, diff etc.. gonna go for an LSD 4.3 long nose and just get a pair of hilux calipers for now. August 13, 200420 yr comment_90976 Depends how fussed about originality you are I guess. I've always wondered how easy it would be to take a period block (ie the correct casting) and just re-stamp the numbers. Of course no-one would do THAT Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/12810-rb20det-240z/#findComment-90976 Share on other sites
