I have an early 260Z, it has the wooden 240z type gear shift. Does anyone know if this is correct for my vehicle? I know the later 260's have the black leather looking knobs. It is the 4 speed.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

I have an early 260z as well. What is the vin # on your car? I have seen very early 260z's that had the 240z style wood shift knob and matching steering wheel. Very early for a 260z build date would be around July-September of 1973. I searched around for an original knob for my 260z and it is the same for a 75' 280z. I am not sure about 1976 and up though. Here is a pic of the interior of my car with an original gear knob. It is black rubber with a green metal plate that has the 4-speed shift pattern on it.

Oh yes Andrew, it is a rally clock. I found it on ebay for 135USD over a year ago. It is a little different than the earlier rally clocks as it does not have an osscilating box, but it has the date, but no timer. There are more detailed pictures of it in my gallery if you are interested. I have seen rally clocks, but the only calender clock tht I have seen was in a 74' Fairlady Z 2/2.

I will get you the VIN and post it in a couple of days. I'm in Baghdad and the company I work for wouldn't let me bring it! go figure. However my steering wheel is not the 240z type. I had a new 260Z in 74 but I think it was a later one because it had the same as what you posted.

From what I understand the early 260Z had the wooden shift knob. However, what made it different from the 240Z is that the 4 spd shift pattern was laid in green instead of the 240's black. I could be wrong but I had one like this before & that's the information someone gave me.

I have seen that before too, but the black rubber with the green shift pattern plate is correct as well. In the factory brochure of the early 260z, it had the green shift plate on the black knob. I am not for certain, but I believe that the very early 260z's came with the wood knobs because they still had extras from the 240z's.

I am not sure about the red plate knobs rusty, but I know they came on the 280's here in the states. There are so many possiblities for these knobs. Everyone is certain of the wood knob for the 240, but when it comes to the 260 there are a lot of parts in transition. My friend Marc has a 75' 280z and his also has the green plate/black knob. I am almost certain that it is original as well.
