Painted undercoating?

xray

Recommended Posts

Hey all:

First time poster, so please go easy on me...

Just bought what I think is a restorable '72 240z, and I need some opinions. The car is originally Lime Yellow (112 color code), but overpainted red by someone in the past (now faded.) While inspecting the undercarriage for rust, I noticed the undercoating had been painted the original yellow! I owned a '73 240z about 16 years ago, and I don't remember this characteristic. Is this original or part of a prior repaint? If it is original, should I consider stripping the undercoating to upgrade it? It lacks sig rust (so far) in wheel wells, frame rails and floor pans, but does suffer from it around batt ledge, door jambs, and some spots on body panels. I will post pics as soon as I figure out how...

Thanks,

X

240Z's did not come from the factory with undercoating of any kind. Some were undercoated by dealers, or owners, and usually not painted. I would say the yellow paint over the undercoat is indicative of a prior repaint before the red was applied. In any case, if it were mine, I'd consider removing all of the undercoating ( yeah, I know it's a big PITA job, but....) to confirm the condition of the entire chassis and repair as needed. Might even POR15 the underside and only then would I consider reapplying an undercoat.

Opinions will vary, but I would do it right, once; and not have to worry about it again.
